After a while of small talk, the first course was served, it was salad with prawns and a garlic and parsley sauce. It was Eve's first time seeing a full set of cutlery besides, a spoon, a knife and fork. She had no idea where to begin, or what fork to use for a salad.
“Work your way in,” Feya whispered to her daughter, Eve was amazed to see how elegant Feya was as she ate, it was almost like a performance, she never saw her mother in such a way.
By the main course, Eve was awestruck at her mother manners, she was hardly following conversation, which consisted mostly of light arguing and catch ups. The food was steaming and smelled delicious, Eve was practically drooling, “are you enjoying the meal?” her grandfather spoke,
Eve's head snapped up, nodding her head rapidly, “it’s amazing, the fairy king must eat well here, it’s like a five star restaurant,” she chuckled.
He grinned, “the chef is quite renowned, he’s been with the fairy king for years, he goes wherever he goes.”
“Good cooking wherever you go, that's life,” Feya sighed dreamily.
“He’s the fairy king's cook?!” Eve bursted,
“Yes, he’s a very nice fellow,”
“Is that allowed, i mean isn’t he only supposed to cook for the king?”
“Well-”
“And hog him all for himself,” Feya quickly cut in, “that would be a crime against all fairies. No, all races.”
Eve gave her mother a doubtful look, “it’s not that dramatic,”
“Well you never know dear,”
Eve sighed, she turned back to her grandfather, “I've been meaning to ask, but why are we here? I thought the deal was to have dinner every Friday at the flat,” she said bluntly.
Feya paled, and gulped, her eyes switching to her father with concealed anxiety.
“Do you have a high ranking position here?” she continued to ask haphazardly.
All too suddenly Eve's grandfather's face took on a serious expression, he straightened himself further than he normally did, looking tall and imposing. He took on an air of command, as his eyes fixed on his granddaughter, he looked ready to say something important. For a brief moment his gaze drifted to Feya, his face hardening as if to tell her he wasn’t backing down.
“Avgeline, your mother and i would like to tell you something, something you should have known before this, but what your mother thought best not to say-”
“I-” Feya tried to interpret but was stopped short by the piercing stare of her father.
“There's a lot you don’t know about this family, and when your mother left she thought it was better that way, but because of that i missed out on so much, i missed out on knowing my granddaughter, and i-” he glanced at Feya, “missed out on my daughter's life.” he turned back to Eve, “this will be a shock and will take time to adjust to, but i own this mansion,” Eve furrowed her brows, “in fact i hold the highest position within court.”
It dawned on Eve what he meant just as her thought were confirmed,
“Eve, I am the king of fairies.”
It was quite too quiet for Feya liking but she had not a clude to do, she stared at Eve waiting for a reaction.
Eve balled her fists on the table, “king? If this is an idea of a joke-”
“It isn’t, you probably know about the princess, my daughter, your mother and how she’s living in the palace in the fairy realm, that she never leaves it. It is a lie, after your mother left here, she didn’t want to be a princess anymore, she didn’t want you growing up here. But my advisors and I agreed that we couldn’t let anyone know that she left and abandoned her title, so we told the fairy public that she went back to the fairy realm, where she has stayed since.”
Eves heart dropped in her chest aching, “mum,” she turned pleading her to tell her it was joke, that wouldn’t lie about something like that, that she wouldn’t keep it from her.her mother looked with shame to her lap, not having the strength to look Eve in eyes, “i’m sorry, Eve. but i didn’t want you to grow up with pressure like i did, i wanted you to have a normal life like i always did, and when your father-” she stopped not wanting to say it, “anyway i had no reason to stay here once he was gone.”
“So you lied!” Eve rose up from her chair glaring at her mother, “not only did you keep me from knowing my grandfather, but you kept the fact that we were royalty a secret!”
“Eve, please-”
“I can’t believe this, I can't. This is too much, were you ever going to tell me?”
“Eve-”
“Raspberry, vanilla souffles with dark chocolate sauce and brandy cream,” a man announced as staff came out from a door with three plates of dessert.
Eve grudgingly sat down, and bitterly picked up a spoon and chewed on her souffle.
The king sighed, Feya was close to tears and Eve was glaring daggers at her food, it was as if he was sitting down after his wife and daughter had a round of one of their famous arguments. He just hoped that Eve would be quick to forgive as Feya had been with her own mother. By the goddess he wished that would be true.
