Chapter eleven
Eve watched as people bustled about the flat packing and lifting boxes as they took them down stairs, Feya was directing the workman keeping busy though it didn’t stop Eve to glare at her whenever she came into her sight.
It had been a week since Eve found out the truth, and she had yet to say a word to her mother. The king had basically ordered them to move into the fairy mension now that there was no reason to live separately, Eve had a feeling he wouldn’t let her or Feya ever leave his sight again. Through all the turmoil and questions, Eve was glad, it had always been her and her mother, but now she had a grandfather, and an opportunity to learn more about her family, maybe even something about her father. She’d miss the flat, the loud arguing next door, the crying of the baby above and the blasted television below playing reruns of that goblin show, (it was a sitcom about a family of goblins living in suburbs) she sighed everything had changed, it scared her, one thing that was a constant, that kept her feeling safe was how predictable her life was but now, she felt like anything could happen.
“Eve,” Feya called, “it’s time to-” Eve didn’t respond to her mother, walking out the flat without a glance her way, it seemed they were done packing and ready to move on out. Eve climbed into the car her grandfather had sent for her and her mother, when Feya arrived, Eve turned her face away from her making a point to not look at her mother.
“Eve, please just talk to me,”
Eve said nothing, Feya sighed, “how many times do i need to say sorry, i was going to tell you i wanted to wait till you were eighteen at least. I was just trying to do what’s best for you.”
Eve scoffed, she wouldn’t say her thoughts aloud, scolding at the window as the car started.
“You’ll need to say something to me sooner or later. Are you seriously not going to speak to me till I'm grey and old? Eve, Eve, Eve!”
It was like a toddler trying to beg their mother for sweets. No matter how loud she shouted Eves name she didn’t respond, soon it grew quiet, as they sat waiting to arrive at their destination.
When the car finally stopped Eve all but bolted out the car and to the mansion, the king waited by the stairs, smiling warmly down at Eve, she still didn’t know how to act around him, was so supposed to courtesy? Bow? Say ‘your majesty’ or ‘your grace’? She almost felt stupid for the consistant bombarment of thoughts, as well as not seeing the obvious truth.
Truth 1) he showed up the same time the fairy king had.
Truth 2) he looked as ethereal as a fairy king should, with an air of command.
Truth 3) he lived in the bloody fairy king city mansion. (the last really should have tipped her off straight away.)
She gave her grandfather a wobbly smile, “hi, um-er, my king,” she nodded her head respectfully to him, she was somewhat happy with it, thinking that had gone well despite all her overthinking. Her grandfather however seemed to disagree, frowning.
“No, no, I do not want you ever to do that, we are family, there should be no formalities between us.” Eve nodded as her mother made her way towards the two. “Come, i will show you to the family living quarters,” he held his arm out like a gentleman waiting for Eve to take it. She smirked, latching her arm around his, as he guided them through the mansion.
“Just ignore me then,” Feya mumbled following behind.
The Family section of the mansion which was private and closest to the large gardens that Eve couldn’t possibly imagine why her grandfather needed or wanted so many flowers and space, was luxurious, Eve saw a millions worth in wealth just in the hallways, and once the drawing room came into view Eve took back her thought, real wealth was displayed there, satin, leaver and velvet settees, chairs, throws and sofas was all over the place, with unique cravings etched into the walls, the colour of a rich green that reminded Eve of a forest. Looking up at the ceiling, Eve saw delicate hand painted clouds just in the mists of sunset. It was beautiful and before Eve could fully take it all in, she was guided to another room, it was the living room, which her grandfather explained was different from the drawing room, used only for casual use rather than formal occasions.
The living room was just as full of expensive things as the last, except it felt more lived in with a cabet of books, lamps, a fireplace, and pictures scattered about of people. Eve noticed one of her mother, Feya was young, wearing a school uniform plastered with a fake smile on her face.
They quickly moved on though, the king eager to show Eve her room. It was in Eve words utterly fucking ridloiusly big. The room was the size of her old flat, she even had an ensuite bathroom, fitted with a bath and a shower separately. A canopy bed was placed by the end of the room, next to a large glass paned window, with white sear drapes. The floor was soft with carpet, the colour of cream, there were empty book shelves, and table and chairs, a small sitting area with a flat screen tv and a red sofa.
“Whoa,”
“You like it? It was your nursery when you were a baby, but I had it quickly converted to a bedroom for you.”
Eve couldn’t help but grin at her grandfather, she threw her arms around him, “thank you, i didn’t think you’d go this far for me,”
The king wrapped his arms around her smiling, “of course i would.” he pulled away turning to Feya, “i left your room the way it was,”
“Thanks,” Feya muttered, “sweetheart why don’t you start unpacking-”
“Is your room nearby grandad?”
By feyas face it was clear that she was hurt by the clear snub, she looked to the floor, rapidly spinning on her heels and marching down the corridor to her own room.
The king sighed, “that was very unkind,” he spoke down to Eve,
She shrugged, “she shouldn’t have lied,”
“Stubborn, why are all the women around me stubborn,” he shook his head, “a maid will come this evening to fetch you for dinner, feel free to explore as much as you want. I will leave you to settle.”
After her grandfather left, Eve fell onto her new bed and sighed, pulling out her phone from her pocket, opening her friends group chat.
Delila:
Has any of you heard from Penny, can’t get a hold of her.
Eve immediately responded,
Eve:
No, why? Has something happened???
Delila:
Dunno just worried, some guy came to pick her up today. No idea who he was. And Penny was super nervous when she saw him.
Eve:
Shit really?
Delila:
Looked like he had a shit ton of money. She told me it was fine, but you know her.
Eve:
I know. I’ll try to call her now to see if she answers.
Delila:
thanks
Eve pulled up Pennys number dialling it, the phone kept ringing, ringing, ringing and ringing till finally,
“I’m sorry but the person you are calling is unavailable right now, you can leave a message after the tone.”
“Um, hey Penny, you okay? Delila said she saw you get in this car with this guy we don’t know. Just worried, let me know if you’re alright. Call me.” Eve hung up. She popped back into the groupchat.
Eve:
She’s not answering.
Lola:
What’s happened to penny???? Tried to call her when I saw you guys texts, she’s not answering.
Delila:
We know, fuck i’m getting super worried now. She always answers.
Eve:
Do you think her brothers or packmates have done something???
Delila:
They're dead if they have.
Eve:
We can’t do anything to them, you can’t shapeshift, and none of us can do magic.
Delila:
What the fuck are we merant to do. I’m going down to wolf town now.
Eve:
Wait, let's wait a few hours, maybe her phone ran out of battery, or it’s not on her.
Lola:
She could be in shower, or reading a book, or studying. You know how in her head she gets, she probably hasn’t noticed the dozen of calls you left her.
Eve:
See, let's just wait.
Delila:
Fine
Lola:
I’ll text Vlad and see if he knows something.
Delila:
Doubt her tormentor is going to give you any information
Lola:
He’s not like that
Eve:
Delila has a point. Just don’t put too much faith in him
Eve pulled away from her phone sighed, she really hoped it was nothing and Penny just left her phone somewhere.
