Penelope and Cassandra are based on two actual co-workers I had. Back in 2014, I was working at a rather popular coffee shop (you can probably guess which one). Penelope and Cassandra were two girls who were the types to never end a relationship without having the next one lined up, had a constant stream of drama, and were always selective of who they were nice to. Yes, they would constantly chat with each other and appear to be best friends whenever they worked together. Cassandra wasn't too problematic in the workplace, she was at times rude and negative, but nothing too serious. Penelope was much more problematic as she'd constantly bring her bad mood into the workplace, had many customers complain about her, and was never honest even in conversations. One day she'll rant about how much she hates someone and doesn't want them to come to work, then the next day she'd be like "Oh I hang out with them all the time!" So, I could never befriend her because I would NEVER know when she was telling the truth. I definitely speculated she faked being friends with anyone and would probably say terrible things about me (even though I can safely admit that I never did anything to hurt Penelope or anyone I worked with, so she'd probably have to magnify any faults I had or flat out lie). At the time, it was just a speculation, though. I left the coffee shop in 2015 and then worked at a smoothie shop in 2017. One day Penelope came in as a customer. We said Hi, how have you been, and all that. I then asked her how Cassandra has been doing? She then responded that she actually hated her. Honestly, the way she spoke about her "best friend" basically confirmed what I had speculated for years...
