It happened so fast one second people were eating dinner and enjoying the holidays with their families and next everyone was panicking in the streets as they heard the sirens. People were hurried into bomb shelters or cellars that their neighbors had. My grandmother was one of the ones rushed into the bomb shelters, she was pregnant with my mom at the time. My mom has told me the stories about how everything was different for her when she was a kid in the unground cities and how everything felt tense. Then she'd tell me about life when she was pregnant with me in 2034 and how she was so happy when I was a successful birth in 2035. When I asked why it was such a surprise she'd tell me, "due to the environment we live in now, not a lot of births are successful."
We were a happy family for ten years until, the mutants started finding our cities. We were being raided not only by raiders, but also the mutants and while my mom was trying to escape she was caught in the crossfire. By the time we made it to a new city she had passed and so I was raised by her bestfriend. Though I shouldn't dwell on the past, I should focus on the here and now.
"Ayleen, Ayleen!!" I whipped my head to the side as I saw my bestfriend, Louise staring at me. "You were glaring at the wall again." She told me as a chuckle escaped her lips. "Oh sorry Lu, just felt like being all brooding today." I replied to her with a crooked smile. "Well you're doing a pretty good job so far, keep it up." She then pulled me up from my mattress and slung her arm around my shoulders. "Time to burn down the kitchen with our terrible cooking, we're on breakfast duty." She told me with a beautiful smile gracing her lips.
I should focus more on the present than the past, no matter how bad my luck is, I'm lucky to have such a good friend, I felt today would be a good day, oh how I was mistaken.
In 2011 almost every civilization known to man was nuclear bombed due to a war. Those who survived either lived on the surface or in underground cities to keep shelter from the frozen wasteland above. Those who lived underground were called dwellers, and Ayleen was one, at least until now. As time went on life became for dangerous for the dwellers due to raids and the mutants. The more things got dangerous the more the situation got urgent. Due to Ayleen’ ties with the leader of her settlement she was sent on a mission. To stop whatever was producing the mutants and to send a message to the raiders to leave them alone. She was of course reluctant to due so, but if she didn’t so many lives would be lost. So she convinced herself that this was a simple mission that could be done in a week, oh how she was wrong.
