"We will be staying a week, if Janette doesn't mind. I would like to see how their first week together goes... don't worry, I'll make sure none of my friends hurt you or the other spirits, ok?" Charlie tried to soothe the slightly panicked spirit.
Janette was a bit confused though about that. "If you guys are going to be here for a week... then who's going to watch the hotel?"
"We have many who went to Heaven, but some decided to stay to continue helping other sinners. They are manning the hotel for the time being." Charlie replied. "Such wonderful people they've become."
Janette smiled. "That's great---" the phone suddenly went off. Janette went to go answer it but was stopped cold when she recognized the number. 'Maybe it's just like Jurassic Park? If I don't move she won't bother me.' The call went to the answering machine. It was her mother.
"Janette?! I know you're there! Answer the phone! We need to talk!" It was no doubt about the house and the rest of the assets.
"Ah, that must be my dear future mother-in-law. How... wonderful." Alastor had finally returned from occupying the boys.
"... Fine! If you're not going to talk to me on the phone then we're going to talk at your brother's wedding! I already have the perfect gentleman for you to go with..." Janette picked up the phone and as calmly as she could muster, responded to her mother.
"Mother! We don't need to talk about it at all! And secondly I already have someone to take me."
"Oh! Did you finally wise up and get a man? Who is he?" She demanded.
Alastor had started growling lowly when she mentioned another male, but now he was fine. For now. "My name is Alastor Barrou. It's very nice to meet you, Mrs. Daweson." Alastor greeted.
Her mother was quiet for a minute. "Hello. My name is Nancy Daweson, Janette's Mother. I take it that you are her boyfriend? About time... I suspect that you will be at the wedding on the 14th this month?" She said with sternness.
*A Valentine's day wedding y'all!!! Now if it were only for Al and Janette...*
He nearly growled again, but contained himself, holding a professional aire. "Only if you're ok with it, ma'am. I don't want to intrude if I'm not welcome. I must say, you have raised a fine daughter, Mrs. Daweson, I will treat her as royalty."
"Hmph! As you should! We Daweson's have a prestige line, and I will not have POULTRY in our future bloodline!" She smacked talked.
He bristled, but again, managed to contain himself. "I assure you madam... My bloodline is quite prestigious." It was true. He'd once been in a line of noblemen when the Americans first settled. As the years went on and from family to family, he was born. And when he came "of age" in the 1920s and 30s. He ruined the family name by murdering random people, maybe a bit (lot) of canabalism, and other fun activities while being a popular radio host. He became the famous serial killer of the bayou. It was only until 1933 that he was murdered accidentally by some hunter while he was "working", thus he became the demon everyone knows today.
"Well! I never heard of the last name of "Barrou". Just what exactly is your family in charge of?" Her mother said a bit of a curious snob.
"We are merchandise traders, Ma'am. In the 1930s, we were big in selling some of the best radios of the time! That was probably our biggest moment, but we have since been dealing with other things..." Alastor hummed.
"Hmmmm...." She sounded suspicious of his claims. "Alright. Well I look forward to seeing and hearing more from you Mr. Barrou... Goodnight..." The line went dead and Alastor hung up the phone.
"Al...? You okay?" Janette asked tentatively.
He tilted his head, eyes half lidded. "Your mother was delightful! I want to strangle her and devour her organs."
Janette was a bit perturbed at the more gruesome aspects of his comment but laughed regardless. "Yeah... she has that effect on people... are you sure that you'll be up to putting up with my entire family in your human disguise for several hours. Cuz I can guarantee you that after the wedding we're most likely going to be kidnapped into the after-party."
"It will be fine. As I was saying on the phone, I'd dealt with similar circumstances in the 1930s. I know how to handle snot nosed humans. Besides... an afterparty with you sounds wonderful~" He sing songed.
Janette smiled wide while blushing at him and his flirting. "Thanks Al." She gently hugged him around his waist and rested her head on his chest. "I honestly didn't know how I was going to make it out alive alone without my mother constantly being on my case the entire time. And with my stoically coward of a father....
It's hard for anyone to reign her in. My grandma was the real one in charge of the whole family and had enough sense to scold my mother. Heck, she would scold my grandfather in front of his business partners if it meant to keep him from making stupid decisions. Good thing he's retired and in an old folk's home. Unfortunately his son, my father, took it over. And though being a bit of a coward, he at least got some of my grandma's common sense. Somewhat. There's still the fact that he chose my mother to be his wife...." Janette sighed into his chest as he gently wrapped his arms around her.
"She, my grandma, would've liked you. Despite being a demon. She has the tendency to look for the good in all things." Janette chuckled sadly.
"That she had." Alastor agreed.
"I don't think I'll ever get used to that." Angeldust cut in, dramatically gesturing to the couple.
"Shut up, it's adorable!" Charlie scolded the spider demon. Alastor stared at them both in annoyance.
Janette chuckled and kissed his cheek. "I'm going to get the sheets and pillows along with the sleeping bags. I'll be right back."
He looked at the others, expecting LOTS of questions. He was right.
Meanwhile with Janette....
She finally found the closet. She was about to open it, when she remembered that there was a spirit living in there. She gently knocked on the door.
"Umm, excuse me? Anna...? May I come in for a moment? I need to get the sheets and such."
There was a moment of silence before the door creaked open a crack.
Well wasn't that just the opening to a horror movie...
"Um, thank you. I won't be long." Janette said as she found the pillows and sheets.
Behind her, Anna appeared, hanging from a rack by a noose. Though being an adult... she was rather childish, loving to scare people this way. It was how she died after all and the reactions were always funny.
As Janette was carrying so many things that seemed like a mountain, she walked right past her without a second thought. So she could put the things in the hallway.
"..."
"Rude." Anna crossed her arms, trying to think of a way to gain the human's attention since she had no idea that Janette was a physical medium.
Janette went back in to gather more stuff and she saw Anna in the corner pouting and thinking. "Dear? Is everything alright?" Janette said as she could gently TOUCH her shoulder.
Instead of Anna scaring Janette, Janette scared Anna, the dead woman jumping a foot in the air and screaming in shock and surprise. "WHAT THE HELL!?"
Janette retracted her hand abruptly. "Oh sweetie. I'm sorry! I didn't mean to catch you off guard!"
"Double what the Hell... you can see me? Touch me?... Hear me..?" Anna asked hesitantly.
"Oh! I should probably introduce myself. I'm the new caretaker of the house. The one that my Aunt Elenore left for me along with Alastor's radio. I'm a physical medium like my grandmother and Aunt was. Sorry again if I took you by surprise. The name's Janette Daweson." She held her hand out to shake.
"Anna... Anna Harrison. You did not take me by surprise, I meant to scream." She insisted stubbornly, taking her hand to shake. "Nice to meet you, new caretaker."
Janette smiled patiently. "I really like your hair. It shouldn't cover your face so much though..." she reached out and gently pushed back her almost black hair out her face to behind her ears. Her face showing off her freckly and cute face. "Oh! Aren't you cute! If you had it your way, you could easily get a boyfriend!" Janette smiled at her work.
She blushed, then scowled. "I-I know that! And I'm not a child! I'm 23!"
"I didn't call you a child now did I? In fact I said that you could easily get a boyfriend. Certainly not what EVERY child wants. Right?" Janette pointed out.
"Right..." Now she felt thoroughly embarrassed. She'd made the assumption, because it seemed like she was treating her like a kid..
Janette seemed to read her emotions like a book. "Hey. I'm sorry if it seemed like I was patronizing you. I didn't mean it. I guess I picked up some of Al's endearing wording." She chuckled shyly.
Anna flinched at the mention of the demon, but smiled. "It's fine... I shouldn't jump to conclusions."
Janette smiled. But then remembered what she had to do. "Oh? I have to get more stuff! Some of Alastor's friends stopped by and they're going to stay for about a week. Is there any big padding blankets in here?"
"M-More demons..?" Anna shuttered and pointed towards all the way in the back.
"Yeah, I thought I should warn you ahead of time if you decide to venture out. I'll tell the others to leave your closet alone. And thanks!" Janette got a stool and shoved her way past all the other stuff to find more than enough thick padding sheets for them. Along with the sleeping bags! 'Perfect!'
"You're welcome, and thanks for keeping Master and the others away!" Anna waved.
Janette put the stuff in the hall then turned off the light in the closet. "Anytime hun. If you need anything, just ask Rosaline or the boys. That way you don't have to come out. Okay?" She said as she was closing the door.
"Ok, um, if you see Selene, tell her, mama says hi!" She smiled sadly.
Janette paused. She wanted to ask about what happened. But she decided to save it for later. She nodded her head. And closed the door.
Now she had a literal MOUNTAIN of pillows, sheets and sleeping bags. 'Oh joy...' she huffed. She started by gathering the padded sheets and blankets, then slowly made her way towards the large living room area. She was almost there when she heard a bit of Alastor's conversation.
"I swear by all things holy and unholy I have no intentions of stealing her soul, Vaggatha. I've watched my dear Janette grow into the fine young woman she is today. I truly love her whether you believe me or not.."
"So what, you've been hunting her since she was a kid?" Vaggie, ever the optimist, demanded.
"Far from. I've been protecting her as her grandmother had asked of me on the day my dear Janette was born. Guardian Angels are so overrated, you know." Alastor replied.
"Protecting her? From what?" Charlie asked curiously.
"Whatever life throws at her. I may not always have been there physically, but I've never left her alone either. Strange as it may sound, I've always been attracted to her in some strange way... I believe it is called... "soulmates" as they say?"
Janette's heart raced and she smiled happily. She always thought that she had some sort of guardian watching her. She was grateful that it was Al and that her grandmother did this for her.
'Thank you Grandma...' she silently prayed.
She finally knocked on the doorway to indicate that she was coming in. "Hey Al? Can you help me with setting up the living room?! I kinda can't exactly see in front of me..."
"Of course my dear! Allow me to take some of that load!" Alastor crossed the room quickly and took a decent chunk of the pile so she could at least see. "You could have called me over to help, you know." Alastor said in mild disappointment towards himself.
"Yes, but you have the reputation amongst the older spirits here. And I don't think Anna is too keen on seeing either you or the other demons in the house." She joked.
Understanding immediately dawned on the red clad demon. "Oh! I see. She has a natural fear of demons because suicide is considered a sin in many cultures. She thought I'd come to take her to Hell and separate from her daughter."
"I've been meaning to ask about what happened to her. But I would rather hear it come from her when she's feeling comfortable around me. Same for Selene. Oh! That also reminds me! We have to reschedule the plans for reno and electricity if your friends are staying here for the week. Unless they can do what you can...?" Janette said unsurely.
