Read Wistful Silence :: Rabbit

The rain pitted onto the rocks outside the cave. A ginger pelted molly looked down to her kittens. Lightning split the sky and a roar of thunder followed not long after. The kittens cried out in fear. The smallest ran to a corner of a cave. A brown tom slowly padded towards the scared kitten. He curled his body around the small tortoiseshell. "Thank you, dad." The small tortoiseshell kitten smiled and looked up at his father. "I'm back!" Said an older kitten, entering the cave with a hare clasped in his jaws. "Who wants some rabbit?" He said, dropping the hare onto the ground. "Thank you, Mint." The molly smiled. "You should get some rest now. You were out there for a while."

Mint tiredly settled into a bed of moss, and the moss soaked in the rainwater hanging from his pelt.

The mother tore the flesh of the rabbit evenly into eight sections, leaving some of it aside to save for Mint. "Alright, the prey is ready to eat!" The molly said. The cats gathered around the prey eating area and awaited for another assignment. The mother pushed parts of the rabbit toward the cats, and they understood. The kittens quickly wolfed down their pieces, and scurried away to have fun and discuss. The fully grown cats, however, discussed while eating, and finished what seemed like months later.

"Don't you think Mint is so brave, going out into a storm to hunt?" Mewed a ginger kitten. "I don't know, going out into a storm to hunt seems kind of unintelligent, because all of the prey will run away because of the thunder and lightning." Responded Moss. "Yeah, but even going out into a storm is brave!" The ginger kitten retorted. "I guess you're right, Bramble." Said Moss, shrugging.

"You wanna go play with the feathers?" Asked Bramble, after a long pause. "Of course!" Moss grinned. The two kittens proceeded to prance over to the feathers and attack them. They pawed at the feathers when they were airborne, bit at them, and pulled it toward themselves when it was on the ground.

When Bramble was bored, he looked over to Moss. Moss returned his gaze. Bramble pawed at Moss' shoulder, a mischievous look on his face. Moss shoved his paw into Bramble's side, also grinning with mischeiviousness. Soon enough, they began to playfully fight, kicking dust up into the air. Mint quickly awoke, coughing loudly because of the dust.

The two kittens stopped, their wide eyes staring at Mint. They got on their paws and bowed their heads in apology. "You are forgiven." Mint chuckled. "You can keep play-fighting, just don't do it near the other cats!" He said.

Moss yawned. "I dunno, that took a lot of energy outta me!" She said. The father overheard their conversation. "It is getting close to your rest time." He said. The kittens expressed their annoyance, and Bramble and Moss headed to their moss beds to sleep.

"Goodnight, Bramble." Said Moss. "G'night, Moss." He responded. The two kittens drifted off into sleep as the sun set and the moon rose, and the rain slowly froze into snow.
