Never in my whole life would I have expected to find myself here. It's astonishing to see what turn your life can take and where that can lead you.
But I am getting ahead of myself. The first thing is first. My name is Rijama, and I am a psychic.
I know what you are thinking, because I've thought the same thing when I was younger, but now I know better, I know the truth.
Since I can remember, I would get these visions about the past as well as the future. It usually happens when my mind is relaxed and connected with a particular object I am touching in that instant.
At first, I was terrified of exploring my powers because I knew it was something other people didn't have, something different. That scared me because it meant no one would ever truly understand me and help me control my powers, tame them.
With time, I started seeing my gift as a blessing, although many people feared it, finding it unnatural.
Still, I've never thought my powers would lead me here, to Africa, standing over a skeleton, contemplating my life.
You must be wondering: "How does that even happen?"
Well, it all started when I decided to take up a new hobby, a rather odd one at that, paleontology.
I was always fascinated by the life that existed before us and wanted to learn more about it. What I didn't expect was that studying fossils would get me where I am today.
It was supposed to be a quiet little hobby, but it turned out to be anything but.
It all started that fateful day when the professor brought one of the ape skulls that his team had unearthed in their new excavation sight.
He wanted us to feel firsthand how it was to hold something as ancient as that in our hands, the energy and power that radiated from it.
"The timeline of this bipedal is different than I expected," I said to the professor without thinking.
"What do you mean? I haven't told you anything about the timeline," the professor said, confused.
I tried my best to pretend I was just guessing, but clever as he is, he could see that I wasn't telling the truth.
After the lecture, he invited me to his office where, after some time, I found myself telling him everything without meaning to.
That was the beginning of my journey here since he accepted my gift as a fact, and he could see much more potential in it than I ever could.
After a few weeks, he convinced me to join his excavation team. That's how I find myself here now, standing over the skeletons of orangutans and gorillas of the olden times, mapping out the lives they led.
Usually, all I need to do to be able to see the life they had is to touch one of their limbs, but in some cases, I need more body parts to have a clear picture in my mind.
Most of the time the visions come to me like picture slides, moments of their lives captured in their very physical makeup.
However, from time to time, I can see the pictures moving. The slide turned into a short video of a moment in their lives that had such a powerful effect on them that it left an unerasable mark that was much stronger than usual.
Anyway, I am rather happy being here, in the African desert, helping the only way I can, by bringing back pieces of life they had to the light of day. I do this in the hope of better understanding the world that was and, in turn, learning to better comprehend the world that is.
I never expected to find myself in a place like this, but now that I am here, I can honestly say I am content.
I am the first psychic paleontologist ever, and I love it.
