It was quiet now that everyone had left, and I would have twenty-four hours of somewhat silence to myself. I felt exhausted, physically from the fight and mentally from all of the information I had just taken in.
Maybe I should take Dr. Everett’s advice and get some rest. Who knows what sort of training they’ll have in store for me.
With a sigh, I slumped back against the headboard of the hospital bed and stared at the open ceiling that showed pipes and wires running along with it and down the wall.
I can’t believe I was in the presence of the Corzon family.
They're seen as royalty among the Antaris, even if they aren't exactly favored by most people. Of course, though, some bowed at their arrival, making sure they stayed on the Corzon’s good side, in hopes of favor, resources, and attempting to climb the status pyramid. However, the Corzon’s were in a class of their own, bringing an army of soldiers that protected the elegance and power that they brought with them.
For so long I’d always wondered what the Castle dwellers were like, hoping that what we were taught in school wasn’t entirely accurate. After all, we were all survivors who fled Earth so maybe we weren’t that different at all. But unfortunately, they were exactly how we were taught they would be like. That is until I met with some of them face to face.
My mind raced back to how the Corzon’s carried themselves when they entered the room. Vargas, the head of the family stood proud in his sand blue uniform which looked like a suit and a fitted jumpsuit in one design. Even the twins had unique outfits, especially compared to the ragged outfits our people have, including my dingey orange jacket that was now on the back of the chair Regis had sat in.
Now that I had thought about it, when he turned to leave, his back had a crest of three swords and a canine-like creature on it. All three swords stood side by side and were upside-down, while the canine was behind them. It reminded me of an animal being caged, but apparently, it represented protection and loyalty.
They were from an Orbital Castle called the Spartan and apparently they were a military family, which explained the amount of force they had behind them.
When they arrived, they took charge of everything, from our education and medical wards to our kitchens and prisons. It wasn’t an easy transfer of power either. Many fights and disputes broke out, even the Sands gang, which was small a few years ago, had now grown, recruiting anyone who despised the Corzon family and their guards.
When the first year since their arrival came to an end, tensions settled after supplies started to come in, and resources on the Antaris were increasing. They brought doctors like Dr. Everett, nurses, scientists, and a few engineers with them to help our sick and wounded, as well as help repair the destroyed part of the Antaris. Some of our previous chiefs simply just became advisors and assistants to theirs and anyone who didn't accept it was demoted. There was only a handful of people who kept their ranks and positions including our captain, Jerah Han, and a few others who work on the bridge, while most others were replaced by higher-ups in the Corzon entourage.
Us engineers were spared being replaced because we knew the ship inside and out, but we were always being monitored by guards making their rotations.
The arena, unfortunately, forced our citizen's numbers to decrease, but the vast majority of them were criminals who probably deserved it.
But here I was alive.
Should I have been added to the list of casualties from the Arena? No, I was just doing what I needed for Mari. I wonder how many other people were doing what they thought was right, people like Reyna and Regis’s father.
I never met their father, but I’m sure he was just trying to provide for his family and keep his kids alive.
At least the Corzons and Dr. Everett made a deal with me, and thankfully Mari’s situation will be taken care of now, so long as I cooperate. I wonder what they’ll have planned for me.
The slow beep of the monitor reminded me that I was the one being monitored, even without the presence of anyone in the room. I turned over to the window, which was covered because the electronic shade was on.
The room was dark and I finally decided to close my eyes and rest as I was advised.
Magic? Awakening?
I closed my eyes, taking in the comforting darkness, waiting patiently as my mind slowly drifted into slumber. For a while, there was nothing until I saw a haze of red, flood into the darkness of my mind.
