While David was downstairs in the kitchen making breakfast, Shībài
zhě examined the house. In the second-floor hallway, there were five rooms one
of which was the bathroom. Between two of these rooms, Shībài zhě saw a table
with a vase in the middle and two pictures on one side with one on the other
side that had the largest number of people. He recognized David in three of
these pictures who was surrounded by who seemed to be his family. The smallest
picture showed David’s parents with a young boy who Shībài zhě realized was not
David as the boy in the picture had yellow hair while David's hair was jet black.
In the next picture, the blonde boy was taller and older, with another boy this
time, who appeared 4 years old. Shībài zhě realized that this boy was David. On
the other side, this picture had two more children this time, a boy, and a girl.
In this picture, David seemed a little older than the previous one so some time must have passed. The children seemed to be 2 or 3 years old and David was either 6 or 7. In the previous two photos, the
blonde boy and the parents were smiling but in this one, only David and the two
children were smiling. Shībài zhě then heard David’s voice from the kitchen,
calling out for someone, “Robert, Britney. It’s time for breakfast.”
From the room on the left of the table, two kids came out who looked like the twins in the picture, but were 10 or 11 years older. The boy had brownish hair and was wearing rectangular glasses. The girl also had blonde hair, but she had dyed it red and blue in some parts and others remained blonde. The feature that proved that both were twins was that both were quite tall. They seemed that they had woken up a little while ago, seemingly by their own alarm that had gone off before David’s. They both had already gotten ready, and with bored expressions on their faces, they went downstairs. Shībài zhě followed them.
In the stairway, there were portraits of every person in the family. First, there were the parents and then the other children, but David’s portrait was missing. But Shībài zhě found it on the table in front of the stairs. It looked quite neglected as there were flowers on both sides of it which completely covered it. David just entered through the front door. He had gone to collect the mail as he had letters in his hand. They looked like bills and such so Shībài zhě expected David to keep them on the table for his parents but instead, he put it in his backpack which was on the living room couch.
“Good morning,” David said to the twins but none of them gave any sign of recognition. To them, David was invisible as Shībài zhě was to everyone else. The twins sat at the dining table where breakfast for ready for 4 people. David was preparing his own breakfast now, after making everyone else’s breakfast. While David’s eggs were cooking, he went upstairs and returned with the twins’ backpacks. They took the backpacks and left without saying anything to David, who in turn said, “Have a good day at school.”
After the twins had left, Shībài zhě looked at David, and said, “What was that.?”
“What was what?” David replied while clearing the table and finally sitting down to eat his own breakfast.
“You did everything for them, and they don’t show you any respect.”
“They are my younger siblings. It is my responsibility to look after them.”
“But why did you put the bills in your bag as well? Shouldn’t your parents see them?” Shībài zhě asked with a concerned look.
“I pay the bills with the money I earn from my part-time jobs and some are given from my older brother and my allowance,” David answered, seeing nothing wrong with what he was saying. “The two of us do it since our parents are busy most of the time.” David finished his breakfast and was now doing the dishes.
“But children should not worry about these things. Once you become an adult, then you should do something like this.” Shībài zhě was beginning to hate David’s parents more and more.
“Can we talk more on the way?” David said as he finished cleaning the dishes. “Otherwise, I’ll be late for school.”
Shībài zhě decided to talk more about this on the way.
