While New Broutow was on the farther side of the island, it was mostly known to be a great spot for the nightlife, as well as being a chill and hangout spot for people on cool evenings. It was also known for its cheese, sugar and other various exports that would go to the neighboring Caribbean islands by cargo ship.
Tommy stared out to the waves, then looked back at his sister, who seemed a little nervous and unsure. "You've never gone surfing, have you?"
Nova scratched behind her head. "I mean..duh. You'd know that."
She knew her other siblings have tried it out too, except her; She always liked the idea but she was always too scared to do so.
"Well..yeah. True. But, would you like to try?"
"Don't get me wrong, I would. But I'm more concerned about drowning, in this case."
Tommy chuckled. "That's a valid reason but lucky for us, that's why we have Splash and Jax here to watch just in case. Trust me, I planned ahead."
He'd gesture her to come into the water and lifted her onto the surfboard;
"First step is to paddle outwards towards the sea."
He would say as he points into the open waters.
"Luckily this side of the island has the waves suitable for riding."
"Second step is to basically turn the board the other way as a wave is coming. But we'd need to stand up as soon as the board catches it. That's the hardest part."
"You say that like I have a good balance..." Nova would respond, her hands a little tightly clutched to the board.
"I mean I don't either but you don't see me complaining, now do you?"
"Not right now but I'm sure that's going to change. Like the time we were at the trampoline park in Aruba and a kid knocked you off the platform into the foam pit."
He grunted at her. "Well that was a different scenario.”
"My point still stands, doesn't it?"
He didn't bother to respond, only giving back a scoff, knowing that she was right. "Anyway..here comes a wave, so help me turn this board around."
Tommy helped her stand up, trying to keep his sister as still on the board as it'd move in the wave's direction.
"Hold on tight, this is the harder part! Keeping your feet firmly placed to change the direction. We're aiming right for the shore."
Nova would freak out a little, hugging into her brother's chest from behind to hold on.
"Alright, if you say so!"
The two felines kept their balance on the surfboard, Tommy being mindful as he steered left and right around the miniature waves that would pop up. Meanwhile, in the distance, two angel dragons would be glancing over at the two siblings.
“Do you think they’ll be okay? I’m a bit worried.” An orange dragon with red spotted paint on his fur would say as he scratched his chin and turned to the other dragon standing next to him.
The blue dragon with a tropical shirt and sunglasses, while also holding a surfboard of his own, softly placed his hand on the worried dragon’s shoulder.
“I’m sure they’ll be fine, Splash. Besides, that’s what I’m here for! I am Jax, the legendary surfer dragon, after all.”
“Yeah but-”
“They’ll be fiiiiine. Stop worryin’.”
Tommy looked to the shore with a determined face as he aimed the board in that direction, and Nova looked down, slowly letting go of her brother’s waist.
“Okay I think I…”
She’d feel herself start to immediately lose balance.
“AH WAIT NO I DON’T-”
Tommy turned back and tried to grab her arm, but immediately fell forward as he lost balance and fell into the ocean with the wave crashing down on them both.
The twins peeked their heads up onto the surface shortly after falling in. Nova looked at Tommy, and softly chuckled.
“Ah…haha..sorry about that bro.”
Tommy softly smiled and shook the water out of his hair.
“It’s all good, I was honestly expecting this. You did a lot better than most first-timers would though!”
They’d hear a voice from the distance.
“Hey! Are you guys alright!?”
Nova shouted back as she helped Tommy grab the floating surfboard.
“Yeah! We’re fine!”
Tommy helped her up onto the board and waded to shore.
This comic series is, in a nutshell, going to be based on my own childhood experiences from growing up in the Caribbean with my family.
Caribbean Escapades primarily focuses on Brian and his close friend Usui. Joined by their friends, Sammy, Jinx, and Tyler, as well as their classmates, they leave their home island of St. Monusea and venture across the Caribbean for the summer; they experience new things and new people to befriend, and on occasion, old and familiar faces as well. And who knows? Maybe they'll discover new things about themselves, too!
