Maybe I'm reading too deep into this but I'm thinking that the "death" is some sort of way to shift the name "Augustus Chevalier" onto Domingo, and that the name is just an alias to help various individuals achieve success and fortune. We've already seen two different characters use the name "Augustus Chevalier", unless the character in the thick glasses was simply our Augustus under a wig and a different personality. "Augustus" clearly has sway and power over many people and seems somewhat wealthy. Perhaps "Augustus" decided that passing on the alias to Domingo will help him regain the money he needs to get his life back together, and that is why he wants to help him and asks him to be his friend in the first place? I could be completely wrong though.

Even though his future seems worse than death itself, he decides to keep strong and search for his "light of hope" that appears even in the darkest and most difficult situations. But, the shape of that light is not what he was expecting..."
