Chapter 1: Once White and Pure

Chapter 1: Once White and Pure

Jun 27, 2022

Eyes are windows to the soul. At least, that’s what some people say. It this world, one’s eye color would change, depending on what they’ve done.

White-eyed people are the most rare, and even then, only seen among children. The reason being that white eyes indicate that one has never harmed someone or something.

As for him, Vail, over the course of his 27 year lifespan, his eyes had turned green. His eyes were once white, but as he grew up, he began testing the waters, just as any child would.

First, he tried to lie a fews times. Of course, it backfired when his eyes changed from white to red to orange, a clear sign he was lying.

The second time his eyes changed technically wasn’t his fault. He was at the office, trying to focus on the mountains of paperwork before him. At some point he dropped his pen and was unable to find it. He asked his coworker if he could borrow his, and ended up forgetting to return it. But, unfortunately, the colors do not discriminate, and his eyes turned yellow.

The third and final time, he had punched his best friend. Beforehand, a friend they shared had been attacked by a Wingless and became hospitalized. His best friend, working for the government that was supposed to kill the Wingless, had told him there was nothing they could have done to prevent the attack. Out of pure rage over a ridiculous excuse, Vail punched him in the face, giving his friend a black eye. They didn’t remain friends after that, and his eyes changed to a shade of green and have since remained that way.

The irony of the final event is that he, Vail, ended up working for the government after the Wingless took over everything else.

Why was he thinking about all of this? Well, his mind had simply wandered after hearing that a new person would be joining their squadron today. He had begun on the question “I wonder what the new guy’s eye color will be” and ended up lost in thought from there.

While he sat there, leaning back in his chair daydreaming, a tall woman slammed open the door to his office.

“Vail!” the woman shouted, “The new guy has arrived!”

“Good afternoon to you as well, Lilac.” he sighed.

“This isn’t time to be joking man!” Lilac replied, “You have to meet him!”

“I don’t HAVE to meet him,” Vail sassed, “I didn’t ever meet Jon when he first joined, and look at us now, we’re great friends.”

“Yeah, sure, but the new guy is an Angel!” she said excitedly.

This made him sit up. An Angel? That could only mean one thing.

They were finally going to be sent to kill some Wingless.

Vail lives in a world where one’s eye color shows what kind of harm they have caused others. Angels were sent by the gods of this world to keep everything in order and to kill those with pink eyes, pink eyes symbolizing that the person with them has killed. But, the colors didn’t discriminate and the Angels that executed those with pink eyes found their eyes turned pink. The gods, believing that the Angels had killed innocents, tore the Angels’ wings and cursed them with bloodlust, creating what is known as to humanity as the Wingless.

Vail is a human, working for a government known as Atale, which tries to fulfill their duty to get rid of the Wingless. As the Captain of Squadron B-12, Vail is always aware of new orders, and yet his squadron has never been sent to take out some Wingless. That is, until one day, a new member arrives, and he’s an Angel.
