The Breaking Point

Chapter 1: Disturbance of Piece

Chapter 1: Disturbance of Piece

Jun 28, 2022

I never did like cooking duty, but when you live in such a small settlement like this one you have to do what is requested of you. We do only have so many people. I shook my head as Lu skipped down the hall. 'How can one person be so cheery when they're raised in this shithole' I thought to myself as I followed after her. People would sometimes refer to her as "The sunshine of the underground" due to her cheery nature. Though I did find it sort of annoying considering how much energy she has. But that cheer is also quite endearing.
After about a ten minute walk the two of us were able to reach the kitchen. "So who should man the stove?" I asked, knowing fully that no matter who is on stove duty this will probably end in a disaster.  "I will ." She volunteered, the pure horror I felt envelope my body when those two words left her mouth was unimaginable. "Ah...No you are better at mixing the ingredients than I am. So I'll man the stove." I told her as I handed her the powdered pancake mix and a bowl of water. "But Ayleen, it's literally just mixing water and pancake mix." She pointed out with a head tilt. "It's not that hard." She continued.
"Well I want to use the stove so I can make different shaped pancakes, so I will be doing the stove." I told her, she did finally give in and started to mix the pancakes. After she was done mixing I started to make different shaped pancakes. I tried to make a Mickey Mouse shaped one and Grandma Savannah requested, I didn't know who she was talking about. Even after a detailed description of what this mouse looked like, it still looked more like a red blob. She was happy with the pancake nonetheless.
Surprisingly enough the kitchen didn't get damaged this time of round, much to the joy or Mr.Conways delight. "Haha! The kitchen still stands! I told you nothing bad would happen this time around!" Lu cheered and slightly hit my shoulder. A rosy blush made it's way onto my cheeks at the gesture. "Ah, maybe I should have more faith in you, you adorable dumbass." I replied to her and started to clean the kitchen. "Anyway make yourself useful and help me." She nodded and grab a rag and started wiping down the counter tops. With the two of us it took about twenty minutes give or take a few minutes, she tossed the rag back into the bucket and wiped her hands onto her jeans. "Well we're done here it seems, wanna go to the shooting range to practice our marksmanship?" Louise asked me with a sparkle in her eyes. "As much as I'd love to, I can't. Clarissa put me on guard duty again. Sorry Lu." I replied and hugged her before walking towards the changing rooms, so I could gear up.
I let out a long sigh, I always did hate guard duty. I put on the uniform and gas mask then grabbed an assault rifle, it was the best quality, but it was all that could be fixed up. "Ready to go shoot some raiders lass?" Mr. Davison asked me with a slap to the back of my head. "Not really, I don't like killing." I replied sheepishly, he let out a chortle, "I've never met anyone down here who didn't like killing." He asked and patted my back, "Glad to see some of us still got morals though." He then put in his helmet and looked me in the eyes, "Try to keep yourself alive Lass, you're morals could make these damned cities a better place."
"Well I don't plan on dying anytime soon, but I'll try to stay alive." I joked then loaded my gun. After he was all geared up we set out on our way to the perimeter of our unground city. I climbed up to the top of the wall to get a better look of what we might be facing. It was strange if I was being honest, not only was the toxic gas thicker than ever, everything felt too peaceful.
I had a bad feeling in my gut, everything seemed to be going too well. It doesn't make sense that we haven't had any raiders for the past three days, that itself was suspicious. But the fact that there was no monster nor raider in sight. It raised many red flags. As I sat there in silence looking around trying to see if I could spot anything. The alarms in the city went off. Mr.Davison was the first to act he got up and started running to start the evacuation.
I then started looking for Louise. As I ran through the streets I could here the screams and cries of people, it hurt my heart to realize that most of these people don't have a chance of surviving we were extremely out numbered. But right now I had to find Louise. I checked the market, I checked the safety shelters, I checked the infirmary and she wasn't there. The last place had to be her house, I knocked on the door repeatedly, there was no response. I tried busting down the door, but I was too weak. After those attempts I looked for a rock or a bottle, anything really and then broken a window and climbed through it. I searched for her all over, I couldn't find her. " I must've been too late, she's probably already gone." I muttered to myself. With reluctance I got out of the house and got as many people I could to the evacuation center. I thought to myself, even if I couldn't save Louise I should at least try to save the others.

In 2011 almost every civilization known to man was nuclear bombed due to a war. Those who survived either lived on the surface or in underground cities to keep shelter from the frozen wasteland above. Those who lived underground were called dwellers, and Ayleen was one, at least until now. As time went on life became for dangerous for the dwellers due to raids and the mutants. The more things got dangerous the more the situation got urgent. Due to Ayleen’ ties with the leader of her settlement she was sent on a mission. To stop whatever was producing the mutants and to send a message to the raiders to leave them alone. She was of course reluctant to due so, but if she didn’t so many lives would be lost. So she convinced herself that this was a simple mission that could be done in a week, oh how she was wrong.
