Dahlia left them to return to her duties. As she entered the nearby room, she moved towards the small kitchen in the guardhouse, placing the trays into the sink. As she quickly rinsed them she thought back on the prisoners.
The one she cut in the leg, Ericson is the name she heard, he was very annoying. Obviously just mad at the fact that she nearly killed him, which she can't really blame. The other one, Songrin, he was nice. It's a shame he got caught up with that troublemaker Eric, he seemed like a true blue kinda guy.
She heard the captain walk into the guardhouse, setting down her halberd and sat into the chair behind her desk. The desk was neat, orderly, not a single paper laid on top of it because they were already filed out into appealing columns in the boxes around here. This in stark contrast to the mess of Dahlias' desk right next to it, with papers that needed signatures last week. The captain pulled out a paper, dipped a quill into the inkwell and begun to work.
After a few moments Dahlia sighed in boredom, sat down in her desk, and started to act like she was working, when in reality she was daydreaming of adventure.
"Work Dahlia. I know it isn't enjoyable, but it must be done." Said the captain firmly.
Dahlia leaned back in her chair, pulling her head as far back as it could go and groaned,
"How is this getting me ready for being at my fathers position?"
The captain didn't look up, and continued to speak while writing," like I said, guard duty is mostly us looking scary. There is only one thing we do more often then look scary. And that-" She placed down the quill, tapped the bottom of the papers so they lined up neatly, then turned them to show the almost completed front to Dahlia. "Is paperwork."
Dahlia looked at the paper. It was the forms to transfer the prisoners to an actual jailhouse. "You've gotten good at paperwork I assume?"
The captain chuckled at that, "when you do something hundreds of times over, you tend to get the hang of it."
After a moment the captain hit her hand on the desk gently, which for her is an extreme act of frustration when it comes to office time. "Problem is that those two are giving me much more trouble than the average thief or drunkard."
The captain stood up and walked towards the small kitchen, presumably for a cup of coffee.
Dahlia turned towards the captain, "why are they so difficult?" She questioned
The captain walked into the next room, but continued to talk, "Well I've been checking into what the elf, Songrin, has been telling us when we questioned him. So far all we got were names but no homes."
Dahlia sat confused. "I mean yeah? No one else really gives too much information about themselves when questioned by guards."
The captain replied from the kitchen, out of sight. "Well, the thing is, the kingdom keeps a very tight hold on all the sorcerers, arcanists, wizards, whatever you may call them. Magic users. However, these two's names don't show up in the records."
"Well, what does that mean?" Questioned Dahlia.
"Well, either they have snuck past the government's eyes and ears and kept their Magic on the down low, which doesn't make sense seeing how freely they used it tonight, or..." the captain walked out of the kitchen with a hot cup of coffee, and sat back down.
"Or... what?"
The captain to a long drink. When she sat the cup down she had a very serious face on. "Or, Ericson and Songrin are not their real names. Which means you know what time it is, dont you Dahlia?"
Excitement ran down Dahlia's spine, "Captain... you don't mean..."
The captain smirked an evil grin, "that's right. It is time-" the captain quickly stood, "To do some good old fashioned mystery solving!!!"
Dahlia knew very few things to make the captain excited, or gods forbid, happy. However trying to solve a mystery by going through years of documents, piecing together the information was one pleasure the captain loved to entice herself with. Dahlia also knew fewer things that she and the captain shared passions for.
"Alright captain, you check the documents, I'm going to listen in on them to try to gain new information!" Exclaimed dahlia, getting up from her seat.
The captain opened a cabinet with all kinds of documents, "Now that's the best idea you've had all day."
