There has always been one person I looked up to the most.
He was immature.
Had a little bit of a temper.
But ... he always thought of others.
That was how my brother was.
My big brother.
Was.
It's usually a term used for people who .... aren't around anymore and .... he isn't.
He hasn't been around for twelve years now.
I was ten at the time it happened.
I didn't understand at the time either.
I was too young to know .... that my brother had left this world.
"Why? Why was he taken from us!?" My Mother sobbed into my Father's arms as I sat beside them, staring at my feet with a confused frown on my face.
I remember that I had hardly spoken during my brother's funeral.
It was due to all the crying adults.
Mainly my parents.
I couldn't muster anything up to say or ask.
I just wondered why they were so upset...
The police never found my brother's body, but he had been missing for so long that he was declared dead.
I took in a shuddering breath as my feet took me down the long hallway until I reached an open office. I quietly peeked in to take a look inside. It was small, but big enough to house a desk, a cabinet nearby and a bookshelf.
Two men were in the room; both wearing the same uniform as me. One was behind the desk, arms clasped together and eyeing his laptop. He was an older man with greying, balding hair and sharp eyes. The other man was standing on the other side of the desk with his arms folded. He seemed relaxed around someone who was probably higher in authority to him.
The man at the laptop finally looked up, noticing me. "Oh, you're..." I could only guess this was the Captain. "...Chris, right?" I nodded and approached the two in the room, cautiously. "That's great. Why don't you introduce yourselves?"
I blinked at hearing this.
There was nothing in the briefing about this...
What was going on?
Am I being moved to another department so soon after I joined?
Then again I should have expected to be taken offguard in a job involving police work.
"My name is Christopher Ward, but I prefer Chris. I'm twenty-two years old and joined just recently, please, go easy on me," I explained, biting my tongue on hoping that I didn't say too much.
I can be a bit reckless with what I say sometimes.
The man behind the desk seemed to look me over before his eyes went to the other man; who gave a slight nod of his head out of the corner of my eye.
They could understand each other from just small gestures like that?
How long have they known each other?
The captain smiled and shook his head. "Well, for a rookie you certainly have a lot of enthusiasm. I'm Captain Jones, nice to meet you too."
I clenched my hands into a fist at my side before letting it go, but instead turned my head away with a light smile. "You think so?"
The man nodded his head at me with a smile on his face. "Yes. That's why I'm moving you into the Crimes Department."
I froze.
That's so sudden.
Why all of a sudden?
I'm still new here.
Do they usually just throw newbies into the Crime Department like this?
"Um ... Sir...."
He looked at me with a raised brow, "What's wrong? Don't you like your promotion?"
"It's great, but .... I'm still new. Why put me there?" I asked him, a little nervous on his answer.
A laugh burst from his mouth like an alarm went off. He stopped only for him to catch his breath and answer me. "You got skills, kid. You're smart too. You might solve a case that's yet to be solved."
What?
I mean I got good grades in school, but they weren't stellar.
Is this guy serious?
Does he really think I can solve a case?
I know I got this job to solve my brother's murder, but actually getting around to doing it....
I'd have to go over evidence, collect evidence, go to the crime scene, look at the scene and more....
Does he really think that only I can do all that?
"Of course, you won't be doing it alone," he spoke up once more and gestured towards the other man in the room. I was wondering what he was doing in here. "This is one of our Senior Detectives. He's been here for two decades and will show you the ropes."
Twenty years?
So, he's pretty much a professional at this then?
I turned to the other man; whose appearance was tall with stubble on his chin unlike mine which was cleanly shaven. He had dark hair like me, but whereas mine is black his was brown. He wore a light brown overcoat with a black suit underneath. His eyes .... were like an abyss as if telling me he's seen .... a lot.
I held my hand out for him to shake which he seemed to regard both my hand and me before finally deciding to take it. "Andrew Softmore." He spoke softly and I tried real hard not to laugh.
I know it's just a name, but 'Softmore'!
If I was in high school he would've punched my head in if I slipped up.
"Nice to meet you," my voice cracked a bit causing Andrew to lift a brow.
There was clap behind us as Captain Jones made a shooing motion with his hands, demonstrating to us that he wanted us gone. We were only there for him to explain my promotion and our inductions.
Nothing more.
He wanted us back to work and probably to work together from now on.
I've never had a partner before, so I wonder what that's like....
The two of us left and Andrew led me to his office.
Which considering he's a detective he probably handles all kinds of cases. He'll probably have a lot of them lying around his office.
He's been a detective for twenty years, so I wonder how many cases he's been put on.
Okay, here’s chapter two of ‘I Can’t Find My Dead Body’ and yes, the POV does switch every few chapters between Naomi and Chris. It’s to show the two sides. Naomi and Ricky’s side is the main side while Chris is more of a side story, but still a part of the story. I hope I explained it well enough without giving anything away for those that are still interested in reading.
20 years of experience, Something tells me he's got nothing in his office. Damn, I wish I can start a job and immediately just get promoted! But I smell something fishy going on like they just put him in a dead department
