Suddenly, he runs into something hard. "Sorry.", two voices say at once. Yujah steps back a little and is faced with a shirtless Gary smiling down at him sheepishly while combing his hand through his dark brown hair. The younger boy looks up at the older one, getting his eyes away from the other's muscular chest as fast as possible. "Sorry, really. I'm on my way to get some water and didn't look where I was going.", Gary says. Yujah looks into the older boy's brown eyes. "No problem, I didn't watch where I was going, either... any chance you've seen my older brother?" The boys move out of each other's way, as Gary answers. "I think I saw him run in the direction of your car? I don't know, though. It's been a while since then." Yujah nods. "Thanks. Also... is it just me or are you missing a shirt?" Gary looks down at himself, acting as if he just noticed. "I guess I did. You know, those shirts don't really like farm work, so they like to hide whenever it comes to it... the more exhausting and sweaty the work is, the faster they are gone. Especially in hot weather. Unfortunately, I can not do anything about this as they have a mind of their own." Yujah tries to hold in a laugh. "Are you always like this?", he asks. "I don't know what you mean... I have been told that I am a very serious person if you are referring to that.", Gary says with a monotone voice and an expressionless face. Yujah, who can't hold it anymore, starts laughing. "Sure they do.", he says. The older boy smiles at him. "At least I got you to laugh. I mean... I don't know what you and Mary talked about, but I know that it must've been a serious conversation. So, I'm happy to cheer you up a little." The younger boy looks at him with a gentle, yet somewhat distant expression. "Yeah, thanks. I'm gonna go search for Jax." Gary grins at him. "Sure, imma go get my water. See ya later."
After the older boy is gone, Yujah leaves the house and walks in the direction of his brother's car, his mind racing. He finds Jaxon leaning against his car, cigarette in hand. As he walks up to his older brother, he holds his hand out. "Can I have one?", he asks. Jaxon looks at him, then the cigarette in his own hand, and back at his brother. "You shouldn't. It's not good for you." Yujah rolls his eyes, takes the cigarette from his brother's hands, and takes a drag, before leaning his back against the car. Jaxon sighs and takes another cigarette for himself. His younger brother waits for him to light it up before he starts speaking. "So...", he starts, taking another drag, "We need to talk about Marco." Jaxon scoffs. "What's there to talk about?" Yujah turns his body towards his brother and looks at him. "Jax.", he says. His brother copies him. "Yujah.", he says. The brothers look at each other, staring into each other's eyes - as if challenging each other. They keep staring. "We should live with him.", Yujah says, breaking the silence. Jaxon laughs. "Yeah, right." He throws his hands up. "Why should we? Tell me! What could probably be a good reason to live with a faggot?!" He kicks up a stone from the ground with his foot, making it fly a few meters. "Dead parents.", Yujah deadpans, taking another drag from his cigarette. "Yujah!", Jaxon exclaims, his eyes wide as he turns around to face his brother. "What? Think about it, Jax! This is our safest bet at staying together! All three of us! I don't care who with or where we have to live... didn't you say that you'd make sure that we stay together? This might be our only chance at doing that, Jax.", Yujah says, his eyes teary. "You really think so?", Jaxon says. His brother nods. "Okay. I'll think about it.", the older brother says, before taking another drag from his cigarette, "And yes, I said I'd make sure that we can stay together - and I'll do everything to keep that promise." The younger brother nods. "Okay.", he says.
The boys keep smoking in silence, leaning against the car, both thinking their own thoughts. When Yujah finishes his cigarette, he tells Jaxon: "I'll go back first and check up on Jonah.", before throwing the cigarette on the ground, stomping on it, and leaving. The younger boy looks at the tractor. It should be fine to try,
right? "Sure.", he answers, again being faced with a grinning Gary. The
older boy gets onto the tractor, then helps Yujah up as well. "Just sit
on the side.", he tells the younger boy. Yujah sits down. It feels
weird. Before he can get used to the foreign feeling of sitting on a
tractor, Gary starts the engine. The younger boy holds on for dear life.
"You could've warned me, you know?", he complains. "Relax", the older
boy says with a chuckle as he glimpses at the boy next to him, "you
won't fall down." After a few more seconds, Yujah starts to relax and
enjoy the ride. He starts looking around, taking in the unfamiliar sight
around him. "Not too bad, is it?", Gary says. "No", Yujah says, "not
too bad at all."
After the ride, Jonah shows Yujah around and shows him all the
animals Martin had shown him prior, when Jonah doesn't know anymore,
Martin takes over and soon, Mary calls Martin's phone to tell them that
dinner is ready. Yujah makes sure Jaxon knows as well. The whole dinner,
the subject of Marco is not brought up once.
After dinner, Mary shows the boys where they can sleep. She prepared the guest room and a couch. "I'll take the couch.", Jaxons says and leaves his brother and aunt Mary alone in the guestroom without another word. Yujah and Mary put Jonah to sleep. Aunt Mary tells him a bedtime story while Yujah lightly strokes his back, making the boy doze off soon.
"Will you accompany me for an early night snack?", Mary then asks the teenage boy. Yujah pauses before answering: "Sure." Mary leads him back to where they had their earlier conversation. "So", she says while sitting down, "What happened between you and Jaxon? I could feel the tension during dinner." Yujah sits down as well and sighs. "It's about the whole Marco thing. He doesn't want us to live with a f--", he clears his throat, "someone like him." Mary grabs a cookie. "I see...", she says before taking a bite. She pauses and takes the boy of cookies, offering it to Yujah. "Do you want one?" The boy shakes his head. "No, thanks." The woman shrugs and takes another bite. "I can understand that it is difficult for Jaxon, I honestly expected you to have more of a problem with it as well. Maybe you should try meeting Marco before you make a decision." Meeting him? Yujah had not thought about it before, but it sounded like a good idea. After all, they still barely know anything about him and all he has is knowledge of the past. "You're right, maybe we should do that.", the teen says with a small smile. "okay, so... do you want me to tell you a few more of our childhood stories?" Yujah thinks about it and readily agrees. After another hour, the boy falls asleep on the armchair he's sitting on. Mary gets him a blanket and covers him while smiling. "Sweet dreams, my child.", she whispers.
