Birthdays take on a different feeling when you’ve amassed a certain amount of them. Like New Year’s day, it's becoming a fun arbitrary opportunity to take stock of what’s up in my life & set a bunch of goals so that I may be obligated to see them through. Hey, but today’s a day of relaxation.
I heard somewhere that in other cultures (or maybe it was dominant American culture but in the past) birthdays were an opportunity for the person aging to express their thanks to loved ones for being a presence in their lives. It seemed like a completely commonsense way to celebrate birthdays & one I have adopted.
