Remind your friend that there's a bunch of people who think he's great, so how does one or two strangers' ideas compare? I was the center of some rumors at the most vulnerable point in my life related to my intelligence (or specifically the believed lack thereof) and some other stupid, minor events. I grew bitter about it for a while and it was seared into my mind that the one who started those rumors was someone I could never forgive or have any sympathy for. Then I recalled that she never spoke to me or came within 5 feet of me prior to the rumors. I started to wonder why she didn't tell me this stuff to my face, so when I confronted her about it, she was surprised I even said anything in my own defense (because I was shy and very quiet... I still am, but it's not as bad) and she was speechless.
