I Can’t Find My Dead Body!

4. The Shadow With Cold Eyes

4. The Shadow With Cold Eyes

Jul 18, 2022

Naomi's POV

It's after school and the day after I found that ghost in my fridge. He's been hanging around me since then, watching me. When I had to go to bed I don't know if he was still watching me or not.

Which is way creepier than watching me do my homework....

I had to tell him he couldn't come with me to school which seemed to upset him, but he seemed to understand to a certain degree.

My Mum had come home that night and never took notice of him around the apartment which I guess means that I am the only one that can see him.

Damn....

This just makes things just as hard as I thought and also a little lonely....

Right now, I'm in the school library in the supernatural section a day after I met the ghost. I know these are just fictitious novels, but the way the author interprets spirits could potentially help me with my current problem. Maybe looking at some crime or mystery novels could also help me with locating a body.

I ran my hand through my hair, groaning.

This is harder than I thought if I wanna get rid of him as soon as possible.

I grabbed some supernatural and crime novels before heading over to the 'Spiritual' area and grabbed a few from there before doing the same in 'True Crime'. After I had the books I needed I found an empty desk and sat down at it, ready to research as much as I could. I don't want to go home and do this because I'll just be disturbed by the ghost again.

If he really wants my help he needs to learn to not distract me.

I can't read if he's always around me.

I opened the first book on the pile to the first page, ready to get started on my research when a cold shiver went down my spine. I frowned and looked over my shoulder, clenching my teeth together in irritation.

That ghost seriously didn't follow me did he?

If he did I'm going to have to rethink about 'helping' him.

It wasn't him.

My eyes instead found a boy; his tired eyes scanning the books before him and his strawberry-blond hair was slightly disheveled, but it looked as though he tried to keep a neat appearance with his uniform.

Why did I get such a shiver when he walked by me?

He looks like any other student at my school.

As I turned my head away from his figure my eyes caught something in his shadow. His shadow looked strange. As if it was moving on its own. Then I noticed a pair of cold eyes, but they weren't watching me .... they were watching him.

I rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

After what happened yesterday I had to make sure I wasn't.

No....

It was still there and it's menacing gaze wouldn't leave the boy.

It was unnerving.

It was unlike the ghost I found yesterday where he just wanted help.

This one .... radiated a type of malice I had never felt before.

It scared me.

I should probably leave....

I quickly turned back to my books, gathering them up to borrow out as soon as I got to the door. As I got out my seat I bumped into someone straight away.

Great, just what I needed.

How embarrassing....

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were leaving," A voice in front of me said.

It's a boy as well.

That's even worse.

I bent down to pick my books up that had fallen at our feet, but I froze.

It was him.

The boy with the weird shadow at his feet.

I want to run.

I need to run.

This isn't a normal thing to see!

"Here, let me help you." He bent down and helped me pick my books up as my frozen form just sat there; staring at his shadow like an idiot. Come on, move! Once he was finished he leaned over, handing me my books. "You can see it too, right?"

I was taken aback by this.

My eyes finally leaving the shadow and moving up to his face to find a tired smile in place.

He didn't seem anything like the malicious shadow.

He seemed genuinely nice.

Though that could just me a false pretense to lure me in.

"Meet me around the back," he spoke with calm voice that seemed to also calm me down too.

Huh?

"Why should I do that?" I spoke up, finally getting over my initial shock.

He looked down with a grimace. "I can explain what's happening to you. It's better to do it there than here," he explained to me as his eyes seemed to glance around occasionally.

Was it because we were in a public area that he wanted to speak somewhere more private?

That still seems pretty weird to me.

However if he can see spirits too I can probably get some information from him on what's going on.

I lifted a brow at him before letting out a long sigh and nodding at him. We both got to our feet and made our way to the exit. The boy left first as I had to borrow out my books. After I had done that I grabbed my bag from the rack, shoved them inside and headed to where he said to meet him.

I don't know why I'm doing this.

He could be lying to me.

How convenient is it that I find someone that can see what I see a day after I start seeing them?

That's way too convenient.

He's either lying or is just very observant.

I rounded the corner of the library and found him, leaning against the wall. He seemed to be staring at his shadow before he noticed my arrival.

"Sorry, but I'd like to introduce myself first." He got off the wall and approached me. "My name is Liam Shriver. It's nice to me you." He gave me a small smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

"Err .... sure...." I said, grimacing and sounding unsure. "I'm .... Naomi Bailey. Now why did you ask me to meet you here?"

He let out a small laugh, but it sounded pained. "You certainly get straight to the point?" I lifted a brow at that comment as he turned away from me. "You're behavior."

"My behavior?"

He nodded at my question. "Yes. I noticed a significant difference between your behavior today and yesterday. We're in different grades, but that doesn't mean I don't see you around the library often." I looked down with a frown. That's true. "Yesterday you didn't notice, but today you did which means something happened yesterday to allow you to see."

"Umm .... you lost me. What do mean by 'see'?"

He turned back around to face me, pointing down at his shadow. "This. You can see what's wrong with my shadow, correct? It's not like yours."

I compared mine and his; looking between the two. They were indeed different, but I could tell when I first saw it that it was different.

The moving form as if it were alive.

The cold, malicious eyes that were watching Liam.

They didn't look like something you'd see on a shadow.

It looked like something you'd see in a horror movie.

"Yea, I can see it? But what's that got to do with anything?" I asked him, playing dumb.

He lifted a hand to scratch behind his head. His eyes looking a bit more more tired than before. "It's because .... I'm being haunted." That certainly got my surprise as I looked down at his shadow. That's a ghost? "But it's not a ghost, but instead a poltergeist."

My gaze immediately went back up to him at his words.

A poltergeist!?

Don't they cause hauntings so bad they can either kill or traumatize people?

That's nothing like the ghost that's haunting me at all!

Why is he being haunted by a poltergeist!

Actually why is he being haunted at all?

Is this someone he knew?

Is it just a random ghost that decided to haunt him?

I have so many questions.

"A poltergeist!?" I exclaimed, clamping my hands over my mouth to shush me. I looked around for a moment before turning back to him. "Why are you being haunted anyways?"

His mouth seemed to clamp up then as if he didn't want to say anymore.

But he was the one who decided to talk to me, so he should at least do that.

He looked down at his feet, avoiding the cold gaze of the poltergeist as he did so. "There's a possibility that we're linked."

"You just avoided my question, didn't you?" I growled out at him.

However he ignored my annoyed comment and continued, "Have you got a ghost haunting you too?" He looked away from his shadow and at the library.

I froze up at this question, frowning. "Yea, I do. Why?"

He continues to change the topic.

What is going on here?

"Have you heard of the 'One-Hit Striker'?" Liam asked me; which caused me to shake my head. "Well, they're a serial killer; who throughout the 1990's killed probably around four or more people. They're signature was to hit the victim to cause blunt force trauma, but they would also do terrible things to the body to deter investigators. You could only tell it was the 'One-Hit Striker' because they always left a baseball at the scene as they're MO."

Where is this conversation even going anymore?

First it was ghosts and now serial killlers....

Does this boy even know what he's saying?

What was his purpose for wanting to talk to me if we're getting off that topic?

"Okay, but what does a 90's serial killer have to do with us seeing ghosts?" I asked, starting to sound frustrated with rambling.

"One of the 'One-Hit Striker's victims was never found."

My eyes widened as I thought back to the ghost I found yesterday in my fridge.

Could he be that victim?

But how could this boy even know about this?

How could he know about a victim of a serial killer that was never found?

Something isn't right here....

"So, do you want to help me?"

"With what?"

"In finding out what happened to the final victim of the 'One-Hit Striker'?" He asked me as he held his hand out to me.

I am getting serious dejavu here.

I stared down at his hand before my eyes went down to the poltergeist at his feet, shivering at its cold gaze.

I don't want to be anywhere near these two, but if it helps get that ghost out of my life quicker then fine.

I grasped his hand allowing a smile to grace his lips when I did so, "I hope we can get along well."

That will depend on your definition of it....

I’ve been watching a lot of documentaries and mystery shows lately, so I might incorporate some things from there for later on in this or other ideas. Also, sorry this chapter might feel rushed. I couldn’t think of how Naomi and Liam were going to meet at first and I didn’t want this chapter to be a huge plot-dump, so I decided I’d do that later for more dramatic tension.
