LONERS was my covid project, I wanted to write a Covid diary, but set 30 years from now. To look at how I feared the world would change, I imagined one where the vaccine never came, and the next generation grew up in isolation. It was a world ripe to explore some interesting themes that came out of the events of the last couple years.
I wrote this chapter during the start of the Floyd protests, and I was deeply concerned with what sometimes still seems like an imminent social collapse, a huge housing crisis, and the the first few rumblings of what we now call Long Covid. For me at least, It’s really fascinating return to these now that the world has reopened and read them in the context of how things have actually unfolded.
