Another day, another ten cents. It was the same routine every day. Teleport to this giant tree where I work. Say good morning to my coworkers as I walk to my cubical. All so I can sit and stare at this stupid bowl of water. Waiting to put on a fake smile for another unhappy customer to call. What day was it again? I looked over at the calendar hanging on the left wall of my cubical; it said May 1st, 820. Oh right, six centuries ago today I received my powers. I remember that moment like it was yesterday.
I used to be just an average nomad looking for food when I came across that stupid town, drank from that stupid well, and got my powers from that stupid guy covered in shadows. He was so generous in giving me such incredible gifts. I can shapeshift but only into a cat. Believe me, I’ve tried to turn into other things. I can perform great magical feats at the level of a supreme sorcerer, but I do not know how to control it. Oh, let’s not forget I'm immortal and can regenerate from the most fatal of injuries, so close relationships with mortals are off limits. Unless I want to continuously watch all my close friends die over the centuries, while I'm frozen in time. Who wouldn’t want these amazing gifts? Yeah, right, that evil bastard put a curse on me. Once I master these new skills, I am going to turn that guy into a bug and step on him.
Although I wonder who those protectors of the well were, did they receive the same gifts? Honestly, I can worry about that later. I don’t need to chase after anymore divine. There are already plenty of them that want to serve my head on a golden platter. Right now, my biggest concern is how am I going to get promoted to a senior level role here at the call center?
“Good morning, Kevin!” Tina said, walking over to me with her wizard hat in hand. Tina wore her hair in braids on either side today, making her Elven ears extremely noticeable. Tiny purple wildflowers were woven throughout her moonlight braids. As she walked to my cubicle, she waved to my other coworkers. Her long, slender fingers sparkled with rings that caught the enchanted crystal office lights.
When she reached my cubical, Tina put her wizard hat on top of her silver hair—adjusting it, so the tip of the cone-shaped hat stood straight in the air. “Kevin, I was thinking about you on my way to work today. You need to talk with the Grand Master Customer Service Wizard again about getting a promotion. Think about it, there’s a chance we can both be Master Customer Service Wizards! Then we can throw a party and have some cake! You can even invite Nyx, so we all can celebrate.”
“For as long as I’ve known Nyx, she has never needed a reason to party. If there is an event at night, she will be there. Besides, we both know how Jim is,” I said. Tina was only my superior by title. Started at the company 2 centuries before her and I've been more than qualified to be promoted before her. At first, I was frustrated when Jim promoted Tina over me, but honestly, I was so happy for Tina, I quickly got over it. “If Jim has his way, I may be an Acolyte Customer Service Wizard for the rest of eternity.”
“No, you can’t think that way! Just say the word I will storm into Jim’s office and demand that you get promoted!” Tina said.
The water in my bowl rippled.
“Looks like a customer is calling. I’ll think about your offer and get back to you later. Thank you.” I said. Tina waved goodbye, then walked towards her office. Turning around, I tapped my wand on the water, and an image started to form.
