Time to Talk to the Man in the High Castle

Time to Talk to the Man in the High Castle

Aug 08, 2022

“Yo Jim, you got a minute?” I said.

Jim sat at his desk, reading a scroll. “Yeah, what’s up, Kevin. I’m just looking at some reports of product complaints. Grab a seat.”

In front of his desk were two chairs. I took the seat directly across from him. “I want a promotion to Master Customer Service Wizard,” I said.

This must-have shocked him as he looked at me with an eyebrow lowered over his eyepatch and raised over his one good lilac eye. “Where is this coming from?”

“Come on, Jim, don’t play dumb with me. You and I both know I’m qualified; I’ve been here longer than anyone here besides you. Yet Tina, who's been here for less than 20 years, and she got the promotion over me.”

“Now you know little Tina is only 60; she’s just a kid. Unlike us, the amount of time she has to achieve her goals is very small. You should be happy for the mortals that can accomplish so much in their brief life span.” Jim said. I remember now; he’s jealous that he’s immortal but not invulnerable. Now that I think about it, it’s kind of funny that this immortal, all-powerful being in front of me is missing an eye and an arm. “Besides, you’re not even qualified, Kevin.”

“That’s a load of crap, Jim, and you know it! We both know I've been doing a stellar job in my role for the last 2 centuries.” I bolted upright, sending my chair crashing behind me.I slammed my hands on the desk, rattling his coffee mug and sending pens rolling, “Not to mention you still rely on me to train all the newcomers and complete so many other duties outside of my role.”

Leaning back in his chair, Jim put his hand behind his head. “Looks like you’re getting aggressive with a superior that will have to go in your file. If I have to reprimand you one more time, you can kiss your chances of being a Master Customer Service Wizard goodbye. Now scurry off little kitty, that bowl isn't going to answer itself.”

“Sorry, sir.” I said, picking up the chair. I placed it in its original position. My blood was boiled as I left Jim's office and returned to my desk. Who does he think he is?

Kevin is working in a dead-end job in a magic call center. He can clearly handle any situation thrown his way, but for some reason, he cannot be promoted to Master Customer Service Wizard. But after an insane call with goblins raiding a town, Kevin approaches the Grandmaster Customer Service Wizard one more time to get his promotion, hopefully.
