Her heart beating rapidly within her own bosom, Iola gingerly made Esamus turn his head to look at Kargan behind her. Kargan’s grin almost made her lose control of her host.

She couldn’t believe her eyes; Nesmir was smiling at her too.

Kargan’s wicked sword blow had set the young guardsman free of his bonds. Now the two of them stood with lethal weapons aimed at Esamus head.

“Stay your hand, Kargan.” She heard Nesmir tell the larger man. “Do you not see that Lord Esamus is not quite himself?”

“Is that so?” The grizzled older warrior rubbed his very square chin. “How can you tell?”

“Since when have you witnessed that look of indecisiveness on your lord and master’s cunning face?”

“He was never my lord and master, rookie.” Kargan laughed, his cold eyes boring into Iola’s through Esamus. “Though I admit, he has never looked more out of character. I see your woman has well and truly taken over his mind.”

“That is indeed her gift, as you well know.” Nesmir glanced at Iola’s physical form in chains.

“Go tend to her shackles; I will deal with the others.” Kargan grunted as he turned towards the utterly confused guards near the doorway.

“Allow me.” Iola spoke through Esamus. “Enough blood has been spilled.”
