Chapter 2: pages 1-4

Comic pre-production and first few pages of Chapter 2 started in the beginning of 2021.
My average rate of page completion for Chapter 1 was roughly 12 pages a year (1 page a month) and Chapter 1 took 3 years to complete.
Three years per comic project is pretty typical for me and while my art was improving, my rate of story completion was still very slow. I decided that I needed to overhaul my process to make it more sustainable for longer projects and give me more flexibility for telling the story.
For Chapter 2, I decided that I needed to simplify my art, spend less time on detailed/clean line art, create reusable assets, take more shortcuts, and basically just be less hung up on the art on each page.
The trade-off for clean line art was that I would start doing rough shading on the pages as well to better define forms, sort of like how things are done in animation story-boarding.
After making these changes (and because the global pandemic gave me back 2 hrs a day from my commute time), I was able to quadruple my page rate.
So while the art detail appears to have dipped since Chapter 1, the process of drawing feels a lot better. Being able to make mistakes and keep moving feels good.
