Appearance: In human form, gargoyles will appear to Vist to have stone-like skin and rock-like wings. In full gargoyle form, gargoyles are made of stone and have wings, but the details of their faces and gargoyle type will depend on the individual. Gargoyle types, which are usually loosely based on some kind of animal, are hereditary but do not impact their abilities (purely aesthetic).
Abilities: Gargoyles have the ability to station themselves in one place and, when they do, their vision and hearing enhances as long as they’re stationed still (they essentially freeze in place for as long as they’re stationed, and moving will break their station). When stationed high in cities, they can essentially watch out over the city and warn others about dangers that exist. Gargoyles can communicate with each other telepathically, which permits them to inform an unstationed gargoyle about dangers that the unstationed gargoyle can then relay to others. In theory, if a city had enough gargoyles stationed throughout it, they could be alerted almost immediately to any crime, potential Hunter sightings, etc. Gargoyles are often hired when a city is dealing with issues such as a suspected Hunter infiltration or similar issue in order to hopefully find and catch them in time.
Gargoyles also have the ability to make and manipulate stone. In combat, they tend to throw rocks at their opponents. They are able to fly as well, meaning they can also drop rocks on top of opponents. Needless to say, this is rarely enjoyable for the opponent, particularly if the gargoyle is able to summon larger rocks.
Gargoyle hearth magic will either drop rocks on potential invaders or grow rocks around their feet, locking them in place until the gargoyle arrives and decides what to do with them.
Alignment: Gargoyles have nature magic that is somewhat dark magic, but not deeply so.
Lifespan: Like their ancestors the sphinx, gargoyles can live about 1000 years. Most live closer to 700-800, though, and they usually crumble apart into rock pieces when they die.
Personality: Gargoyles are extremely patient and are frequently known to station themselves in place for years and even decades on end.
Known hybrid variants: No true hybrids are known, but gargoyles can make hybrid children which can have a rock form, wings, and/or rock magic abilities. Hybrid children of gargoyles, however, cannot communicate telepathically or station themselves.
Example members: Elanius and their family
Gargoyles appear primarily in the side story Mirrored.
