Welcome gift Part 3 (Casey POV)
The way things were presenting themselves, it was unlikeley that the poor Jonas Krewood was still among the living. One more day of research however, managed to bring some interesting connections of the security company and its mysterious members to light. None of them were built on amicable business relationships or logical backgrounds. It was more likely that Jonas involuntarily caught the attention of someone troublesome, who, after a talk with him, was now interested where he belonged to. And if those people were a little too cold blooded, that talk would have cost Jonas' life.
Despite all that, I couldn't cancel the important delivery that was scheduled for today. Business had to go on. Our hightened security level however, gave me enough reason to send out one of my Eyes to monitor the transaction. He would stay out of sight while making sure that everything was going smoothly.
As soon as Cody reported that they didn't encounter any disturbances, I was relieved. Any other business could be postponed in favour of solving our issue with the people of Jefferson Security. A big sum of cash and maybe the option to get their hands on some of our exclusive products might be enough to make their sudden interest in me subside.
After Cody, Judith entered the office and handed me a stack of documents, that turned out to be a dossier about Afghanistan.
„Sandy had a breakthrough“, she explained. „We have a new contact. I'm guessing that any negotiations will be pushed to next week, considering our current situation?“
After one of our latest deliveries fell through, I had decided to take the flight overseas myself, to personally verify if our contact there was reliable. I would prefer to not chance any further interactions, since 160 million was too much to gamble with.
„Judith, would you-“ The sudden screech of alarm sirens cut me off, followed by an earthquake-like tremor that shook the whole building.
Judiths professoinally reserved expression turned serious, as she managed to produce an impressive machine gun from behind her office-chique skirt.
„Stop!“, I interrupted her, before she could throw herself into the action. „Evacuate. I'll go and have a talk to the gentlemen on my own.“
Judith was one of my most loyal and most trusted employees. Still, I could see the reluctance behind her perfectly made up eyes. She hesitated so I had to be more forcefull.
„Go! We can't deal with a shoot out in the middle of central New York, right now! Otherwhise we'd have to explain our arsenal of special weapons to the FBI.“ She nodded, put the gun away and rushed out of the office through the secret exit that was usually hidden behind my file cabinet.
From my tablet I observed her as she helped the other employees out of the building. At the same time I decided to display my welcome present on the big screen behind me. Then I leaned back and waited.
