Through My Eyes: Index

Hydras

Hydras

Aug 15, 2022

Appearance:         Hydras appear to Vist to have scales and fins running along either side of their heads.  In shifted form, they are reptilian and most have 2-3 heads, depending on what magic types they have, but occasionally a hydra may have more heads.

Abilities:                Hydra heads each have their own kind of magic.  The most common types are acid and fire, with less common varieties of poison, ice, and lightning.  Hydras can use their respective magic types while in human form, but are more limited in their use and are vulnerable to those same elements, despite being immune to them while in hydra form.

Hydra hearth magic corresponds to whatever kind of magic the hydra has.  Acid magic is generally not enjoyable for an intruder and acid + fire tends to result in a need for immediate medical attention.

Alignment:            Hydra magic is mostly elemental, but partially nature as well.  They are pseudo-merfolk who make eggs that then require large bodies of water to grow and hatch; a bathtub is not sufficient to make a hydra egg hatch.  Hydras are not genuine merfolk, however, despite their need for water.  They are neutral to most merfolk, with the exception of kapras, with whom they have a long-standing feud.

Lifespan:               Hydras live about 175 years.

Personality:           Hydra emotions can vary abruptly, which is theorized to do with their different heads/different kinds of magic.  Like kapras, they are fiercely loyal to their leader and will follow them without question.

Known hybrid variants:      None known.  However, hydras themselves are a true hybrid between naga and witches, from a long time ago.  Hydras created via a witch/naga union are very rare currently, and many people have forgotten that hydras are actually a true hybrid because they’ve been around so long and have their own culture and extensive history.

Example members:                 None

Hydras have not yet appeared in TME or any side story.

I wasn't originally going to have hydras be true hybrids, but it dawned on me that they are very similar to both witches and naga in different ways, so they are now hybrids. I can't really explain where the laying eggs thing comes from as far as their hybrid-ness, but hybrids sometimes have abilities and stuff that their ancestors lack, plus hydras have been around a long time, so...it's just a thing they do now. Whether they did it originally is less clear.
