Boruto was asleep, snoring and turning in his bed. Mount Myoboku was great but he wasn't sure how Naruto was able to survive there for even a few days, let alone the three years he had trained there. He had heard that his father had trained there to finally gain a power that he could control, given that he had enmity with his Tailed Beast, The Nine Tails Kurama. Like many of the stories he'd heard about his dad this was just as hard to believe given how tight the two now seemed. Kurama practically was like a guardian to Naruto at this point. In fact, much of what he ended up knowing about his father came from Kurama.
As a young boy, Boruto would come home and find his dad wasted on the couch, too tired to hear about his day at the Academy. Boruto would always have a tinge of anger, not exactly sure why his father wasn't as attentive to him as he was before he became the Hokage. His mother would simply sit beside him for a moment, watching him sleep and then getting a blanket to cover Naruto. Sometimes, a Naruto clone would pop up and help Boruto with homework, before popping away, leaving Boruto all alone. He understood why his dad had to be the hero of the world but sometimes he wished, even just once, Naruto would just be all Boruto's. Just one day when his dad retires from saving the world and just hang around. It was selfish, Boruto understood, but the desire still stood.
A flash ripped across his room and Sarada appeared in his room. Boruto slowly opened one of his eye to a smiling Sarada, then closed it shut for he thought it was a dream. Then he ripped his eyes open suddenly at the shock of having Sarada appear in his dreams and saw Sarada looking at him still.
"You snore pretty badly,"Sarada said.
Boruto jolted from his bed and hit his head as he fell to the floor. Sarada chuckled. Boruto rose from the shock, made a clone and had it spear Sarada, dragging her across the room back to the window she jumped in and tossed her off. She quickly supported herself on the window frame and leapt towards the roof.
"What the hell, Boruto? That was so mean."
"You stay away from my bedroom until I'm done getting prepared."
"It's not like you weren't dressed or anything."
"You didn't know that. I've been away for 3 years. You had no right to assume anything about me."
Sarada sat on the roof, legs crossed. "Alright. If I get three things right that are still the same about you, then your response is dumb. Deal?"
Boruto was intrigued. "You got it."
Sarada spent a few moments thinking. "We've established you still snore like a pig."
"Doesn't count."
Sarada rolled her eyes. "Fine. When I fought you yesterday, your clothes looked half dry. My guess, you still don't care about hygiene." There was a small silence.
"That's one."
Sarada smiled. "Your trousers were probably the only thing you didn't wash yesterday. There was a bit of green mold on it."
"I don't know if you've noticed but green mold isn't very rare."
"That one is. When I evaded your clone, I took a whiff of it just to be sure. There's only one place that smell comes from." The forest outside the village was where a younger Sarada and Boruto met for the first time and fought. "You still miss my first punch."
"Definitely wrong about that one but keep going."
"When I fell, you...uh, you know what? Maybe I don't know you."
"Yeah. Yeah, you're right."
"That's so cold. You're not supposed to agree. Are you changed yet?"
Boruto made a clone that slipped out of the window and grabbed onto the roof, Boruto jumped and grabbed its legs and was lifted to the air. The clone groaned at the weight and poofed away and Boruto somersaulted and landed on the roof, hands in the air, and flashed a smile at Sarada.
"Let's go before Inojin makes a tantrum," Sarada said and led the way.
Inojin made a tantrum. They were 5 minutes late and that's all it took for Inojin to complain for a bit. Konohamaru was just seated on a rock, his face expressionless and his eyes deep in thought. Boruto was the first one to figure it out.
"Something wrong, Sensei?"
"Nothing I can't handle and nothing you need to know about right now." Sarada gave a weird look at Boruto, one Boruto returned in confusion. Inojin looked at the two and stopped talking.
"Can I go back to complaining now?" Inojin asked.
"No, you may not. We get it. We are late."
"Sarada's right," Konohamaru said as he rose.
"But Sensei, they always do this," Inojin pouted. Konohamaru immediately was behind Inojin and placed his hands on Inojin's shoulders.
"It's okay, Inojin. Let's forget about that for now." Inojin was silent. Konohamaru led the three ahead to the small stadium. It was still under construction on the outside but it was a very functional field in the inside. The Great Heaven and Earth Tournament Field. Shikaku Nara (named after his grandfather), Cho-kou "Chocolate" Akimichi and Jackie Lee of Team 8 were present. Cho and Jackie were arguing about something and Shikaku was playing Shogi with a puppet he was directing with his shadow. Team 8 noticed Team 7 arriving and stopped what they were doing.
"About time you guys showed up!" Cho shouted.
"Right? They're always late and they're the ones who wanted this in the first place," Jackie agreed. Konohamaru gave a nervous laugh.
"I mean it is better than being at home."
Moegi entered the field, draining the rest of her plastic ramen bowl, letting the soup drain rather carelessly across her chin. She fished out a chocolate bar and took a bite. Cho ran to her and flashed her signature puppy dog eyes. Moegi flashed an annoying look back at her student.
"I don't like being manipulated. You want something, " she said as her eyes turned sharply towards Konohamaru, "then the least you should do is be clear." Konohamaru smiled at her and she turned her eyes back to Cho. Cho cleared her throat.
"I'd like a chocolate bar, Moegi-Sensei." Moegi took out another bar and gave it to her. Cho danced her way back to the rest of her squad and when Jackie asked for a piece, Cho flat out refused.
"You ask for one too, Jackie."
Jackie's eyes nervously turned to Moegi's and Moegi took out another bar. Jackie walked slowly towards Moegi, her head on the ground. Jackie simply lifted her hand, half expectant and half fearful, her hands trembling. Moegi then sighed and crouched, forcing Jackie to look down at her.
"Look at the flavor, Jackie. Notice something interesting in it?" Jackie studied the bar and her eyes widened.
"It's mint-flavored. That's my favorite flavor."
"That's right, Jackie. What else do you remember about mint flavor?"
"That you don't like it. You think it tastes like toothpaste and should be used for torture purposes only, Sensei."
Moegi laughed at this. "Yes, that is actually what I said. That means I'm not going to eat this. I bought this for you. Next time you want something from me, you shouldn't be too embarrased to ask. I know I don't always seem approachable but I'm your Sensei. You know that, right?"
Jackie simply nodded her head.
"Now take this from my hands. I'm already dying from the smell." Jackie smiled, took the bar and ate it. Moegi turned to Konohamaru. "I think we should get this show on the road."
Jackie and Cho argued again about who was more loved by Moegi-Sensei, Shikaku groaned, Boruto and Sarada cheered for the girls to fight and Inojin, apalled, was trying to stop the fight. Konohamaru and Moegi decided to test the field for safety so that the tournament can finally begin.
