Skip has been in the fresh food stall for a good ten minutes now trying to figure out his next step as he holds a bag of kimchi, feeling the wetness and seeing the redness of his hand. The bag was not wiped beforehand. He did not check before picking it up. He is wearing a white shirt and light brown pants. He has nowhere to wipe the sauce stuck to his hand.
He lets out a sigh. The 30th one in the past ten minutes.
His eyes go to the expiration date and he lets out an even bigger sigh at the sight of “2021”.
Skip is a simple man. He never used to make New Year's premonitions like most people. But after going through hell with an asshole of a boyfriend back in 2019, he made a brave statement at the 2020 New Year’s party he attended:
“This is going to be my year! Just watch me, universe!”
The universe was watching. The universe decided to bring a pandemic.
That was one year ago. And it was not Skip’s year.
As he sighs back and forth over his hand and the nothingness of his life, not giving a damn about how long it’ll take him to move from that one spot since he has nowhere to go in this pandemic, a tall man comes close to him to look for fresh tofu.
In a world where everyone is covered in masks and face shields, Skip could still tell that this man is attractive. The visible part of his face has clear skin. His nose bridge is tall and slender. And best of all, his light blue eyes are so clear and look so flashy underneath long, curly lashes.
Obviously enough, Skip stares. To no end. That is until the tall man starts to face him and asks, “Excuse me, could I reach out for the tofu for a minute?”
Church bells start to ring in Skip’s head after hearing the tall man’s smooth voice. And it was deep. But not as deep as the void Skip is in after being struck dumb by this tall stranger.
“Hello?” the man asks.
“Hi!” Skip replies softly. It takes him an embarrassing three seconds to realize what was happening and clears his throat before saying, “I mean, yes. I can move. Sorry!”
In his confusion, there is one thing Skip has forgotten. The bag of drenched kimchi in his hand.
As he tries to give way to the man, he somehow manages to swing the bag over to the man’s shirt.
The tall man is also wearing white.
