15-First relationship communication issues
Leith's pov
It's been a few days since we celebrated Sam's birthday and things have been kind of quiet. I was really surprised when Kenton kissed me in front of everyone at the party but to my utter surprise, they were surprisedly supportive.
They were really happy to know that we were dating especially Kenton's friends. There were a few people at the party who didn't really like Kenton kissing me of all people but other than that we mostly got support.
After Kenton's and I's relationship status was revealed, he and I talked with his friends. We told them to keep our relationship as friends only and I explained that I didn't want my parents to find out. Luckily, despite being at the party and a bit drunk, Kenton's friends supported my demand.
Regardless, Sam's birthday was fun even if I don't know him well. He seems quite cool and the party wasn't that bad despite being lots of people there.
As I mentioned there was alcohol but I believe people were interested in actually celebrating Sam's birthday than actually drinking for the sake of it.
Other than that, Kate, Kenton's friend is kinda cool too. She makes me think about Sam. She and him are so similar I swear. I'm not surprised they were arguing at the party.
Kenton's friends didn't mind that I was there and tried to get along with me. I don't think they'll ever be my friends unlike what Kenton thinks but it's no longer true that I'm not cool enough to be one of them. They are more chiller than I thought.
Once you manage to actually talk to them, they turn out to be quite cool people, too bad they are too popular for everyone to actually talk to them.
Anyway, I still can't believe that Sam and Mattie are dating. I just...it still feels so weird even if Mattie told me everything the other day. I just don't know what to feel about it. Sarah's a lesbian, Mattie is bisexual, gay? Ugh, he won't tell me what his sexuality is. I just thought I would be the first one to know such a thing. Yeah, to my luck he did tell me everything about him and Sam but he didn't tell me when he found out he liked guys.
I mean he never was keen on dating, I agree but I just thought he wasn't interested in relationships that's all. I always assumed he was straight because I remember when he used to tell us the craziest stories about when he used to be dating when we first became friends with him. Maybe I shouldn't have assumed he used to date girls only.
When I tried asking him about it he just straight up told me to focus on Kenton. What does that even mean? I don't really like that Mattie is secretive like that with me. He has no reason to. As far as I know, Sarah didn't know more than me so...it's pretty even. I'm glad that he doesn't hold secret grudges against me.
Ugh, why do I overthink everything? Chill out Leith, chill out. The Holidays are meant to relax and see our families because it's almost Christmas. That's a bonus.
I kinda miss Kenton now that I think about it. I don't like being in a school where everyone stares at me, but oh geez it will be worse when we come back to school.
Even if it's that, I like Kenton...I kinda of miss hugging him. I know we only started dating less than 2 weeks ago but I've gotten used to his presence and being with him.
Through this, we aren't as touchy as people think we are. We only went on one date, yeah, that awkward date, that's great...but I guess two weeks is not enough for another date.
We kiss sometimes and hold hands. Yes, Kenton started holding my hands but not in public. I'm not a fan of that all too much and we have to keep our relationship just between friends. The school already suspects too much, I don't want to add fuel to the fire.
It's mostly rare that we hold hands when we are just between us two. I don't know if that should be of concern. It is normal?
It's not that I set expectations concerning Kenton...but I can't lie that I wasn't really expecting this. As Kenton is really popular and he's everywhere in school, I saw how he was with his ex and...it's definitely not the same with me. Should I be concerned about this?
It's not that I want more per se but still is this what dating Kenton should look like? I don't have a lot of experience except Nick but still, I'm pretty sure we aren't acting like we should as a newfound couple.
Maybe it's because we were a secret but now that more people know would it be the same? I haven't seen him since Sam's birthday party. It's been 5 days since then. That's quite a lot...We still do text and call now here and there but we still haven't talked about seeing each other.
I know I could've asked him to come to my house or make plans to see him but I don't really want him to see my parents and I kinda forgot to make plans to see him. Now that I think about it, why didn't I do so?
Anyway, Sarah came over the other day but that's fine because my parents have known her for years.
They don't know she likes girls. I don't even want to know what they would do if they found out about her or even if they found out about me.
Back when I was dating Nick, it was easy to pretend. We were still young and we were already friends so my parents already knew who he was.
Well, my parents don't know Kenton that's the problem. I know for a fact my parents would do a full interrogation session if I invited him. Thank goodness they don't question nearly as much when it comes to going to my friend's house or going elsewhere.
My parents are kinda strict but not gonna lie I'm used to it. Obviously, I learned over the years have to break some of their rules. I break the ones that aren't as obvious. Just the fact I'm gay and identify as non-binary is one of the rules that I broke.
Regardless, I still can't believe that my parents still believe that Sarah and I are dating. Yeah, they think we are dating and they have been thinking that for years. I can never close the door when she comes over and they won't stop mentioning things about what they think about us dating.
This is exactly why I avoid as much as possible having my friends over. It isn't as crazy for Mattie but still...
"Hey, what'd you thinking about?" I instantly flip out once I notice my brother Cade at my bedroom door.
"Oh god! You scared me, Cade!"
"Sorry, I just couldn't help but want to know what it is you are thinking about."
"Why's the door open?"
"You were the one that left it open?"
"Oh yeah, silly me."
"Anyways can I come in?"
"Aren't you supposed to be reading a book?"
"Don't assume things, Leith, I don't always read books." He rolls his eyes.
"Yeah, yeah I know but still."
"So, let me guess you were thinking about a guy?"
"Shh Cade don't say that out loud." I push him inside my room and close the door.
Yeah, he knows I like guys, the only family member to know.
"What's your problem?"
"Mom and Dad can hear us you know?"
"Yeah and?"
"Oh god, how dumb can you be? Aren't you supposed to be smart?"
"Ok, I just forgot and for the record, yes I'm smart."
"Oh leave it then. If you're so curious, yes I was thinking about a boy."
"Aha, I was right after all. I'm not as dumb as it seems."
"Yeah, I'll give you that."
"Who's the lucky guy?"
"Well...it's Kenton..."
"Hm...have I ever heard his name before?"
"Well, I might have said his name before but barely. You're always busy studying or reading a book so that may be why you don't know who he is."
"It also may be because you refuse to tell me about your secrets." I slightly glare at him.
"Ah, so I'm right again. I'm way smarter than you Leith."
"Haha, really funny," I say sarcastically.
"But seriously though, who's this Kenton guy?"
"Well...he's my boyfriend..."
"Wait what? I missed a chapter?! How the hell is he your boyfriend?!"
"Shh, don't be so loud. They might hear you and I don't think Mom and Dad would be really pleased to hear you curse or the fact I like guys."
"Oh stop being such uptight. I know we have to be careful with them but you don't have to be this cautious."
"I know, I know. I'm just scared that they'll find out."
"I know...sorry. Seriously stop changing the subject and tell me more about this Kenton guy."
Oddly, he's interested in my love life but okay.
"Well as I said he's my boyfriend. He's really popular at school so..."
"Wait, does that guy have black hair?"
"Yes?"
"Oh gosh, I know who he is. He's friends with Samuel, Oliver and Jack?"
"Yeah...How do you know?"
"Did you really forget we go to the same school?"
"Oh yeah...wait how come I never see you at school?"
"I don't know. I've seen you a few times at school but I mostly hang out outside."
"Outside? That explains why I never see you. Don't you get cold being outside like that?"
"Nah, just a hoodie is fine but I'll admit that the last few days have been rather cold so I might be spending more time inside."
"How come you've never seen me with Kenton around?"
"Well I might have seen you a few times with him but I didn't want to bug you with it."
"Oh.."
"I always wondered why on earth you were with him but I didn't want to push my luck."
"You know you can talk to me more often right?"
"Nah...it doesn't feel right. You deserve to have some privacy with your friends and I'm just a freshman. You're a senior. I don't want people asking questions about us hanging out together."
"Well if you don't want to hang out with him suit yourself but my invitation is there."
"Now that you're dating Kenton I want to be with you even less now. He's way too popular!"
"Don't tell me you're too shy to talk to me."
"It's not like that..."
"Sure it is. It really is weird now that I think about it that we pretend we don't know each other. Most siblings aren't like that between each other."
"I know...but I can't be seen with you..."
"Cade...don't be like that."
"My friends wouldn't want to hang out with you!"
"Cade, why are you panicking? I don't bite." He sighs.
"It's nothing."
"Hm, you sure?"
"Anyways, tell me more about him. How did you manage to get with Kenton freaking Miller?!"
—————-
I don't know how we went to this but it seems like I'm supposed to buy Kenton a Christmas present. Well, that's what Cade told me. I can't believe that it's my little brother that gives me relationship advice. It's embarrassing...
He offered that we could go buy Christmas presents together later but I told him no.
I don't know what to give Kenton. We are indeed dating and we are supposed to know everything about each other but it's not the case...I don't want to ask Cade for more relationship advice and I know for a fact that my friends are probably dying to give me ideas, so I'll ask them.
Now that I know Mattie is dating Sam, he shouldn't be as interested in knowing what's going in between Kenton and me but I know better than this. Sarah...Sarah...well, she never changes, does she? Between us 3 we have a group chat so we can all be on call at the same time so imma use this, this time around.
Sarah: Hey, what's up?
Mattie: Sup? Why are you calling both of us? Is there some sort of emergency?
Leith: I kinda need help.
Sarah: What help? Is it about Kenton?
Leith: Well yeah. I need some Christmas present ideas to gift him with.
Sarah: Aw, now you guys make me feel so single...
Sarah knows now...she was just as shocked as I was regarding Mattie dating Sam.
Mattie: Oh shut up Sarah! You just have to get yourself a girlfriend.
Sarah: Easy to say for you. There are not tons of girls that like girls too so it isn't as easy as you make it to be.
Leith: Guys stop getting out of topic. What should I get him for Christmas?
Mattie: Who gave you that idea? We all know it can't be you since you kind are dumb.
Leith: Mattie! Ugh, fine it was Cade.
Sarah: Cade? Since when does he get involved in your love life?
Leith: What? I know he's usually busy reading but for some sort of reason he was interested in my business so...
Mattie: Well that's good. I was starting to be worried that he was too busy reading and studying. The guy can't take a break. I'm afraid he doesn't know what social life is.
Leith: Mattie! Stop being like that. First of all, he has friends and second of all why on earth would you be worried about him you weirdo?
Mattie: What? Aren't I allowed to?
Sarah and Leith: No!
Mattie: Geez, I get it no need to be like that. You should get him a movie ticket.
Leith: Woah, woah wait? Huh? Are you talking about Kenton?
Mattie: Yes I am. He doesn't seem like the type to like sports all that much. I have never seen him or heard him talk about sports nor does Sam through. Anyway, I'm pretty sure Kenton wouldn't be opposed to a movie ticket and besides that, it's a reason for you guys to go on a date. I know for a fact that you guys didn't go on your second date yet, so that's where you guys should go for the next one.
Leith: Damn, how the hell do you know me that much Mattie? It's almost scary how much you know about me.
Mattie: Well, that's magic.
Sarah: Hey, don't forget me, you guys!
Mattie: We weren't forgetting about you either.
Sarah: Yes, you guys totally were! Anyway, I think that's a great idea. You should get him that Leith.
Leith: You do?
Sarah: Yes you should. Kenton will be happy that you thought about a way for you guys to spend more time together. Seriously it doesn't even seem like you guys are dating. Are you guys only friends and you're afraid to tell me?
Leith: No...no we are still dating. We haven't seen each other since Friday so...
Sarah: What?!
Mattie: Are you for real Leith? You can't do that. I know that you don't want him to come to your place but how come he hasn't said anything about him inviting you to his house?
Leith: I don't know...Should I be worried?
Mattie: Hm I don't think you should worry over it but just consider that it's kinda strange. Is he busy with his family?
Leith: Not that I know of. He's still at his house. He told me his brother is back home.
Sarah: Oh yeah, he has a brother I forgot about it. Wasn't his brother Nolan?
Leith: I think so yeah? What about it?
Sarah: Nothing just asking. You should hang up Leith. It's already starting to get dark outside. I'm pretty sure you'd like to buy Christmas presents for your family before dinner right?
I look outside and fair enough it is starting to get dark outside
Leith: You're right! Shoot, gotta hang up! Bye, guys! Talk to you guys later!
Sarah and Mattie: Bye!
I hang up and I go knock at Cade's door. He said we could go Christmas shopping together and I want to take him up on his offer. Now I'm dying to go buy those Christmas presents even if I have to buy the ones for the whole family.
"Cade?"
"Yeah?"
"I want to take you up on your offer from earlier."
"What changed your mind?"
"I'll tell you later."
"Oh, I see what it is."
He comes out a few minutes later ready to go.
"I was thinking about what you told me earlier and I think you should invite Kenton."
"What are you nuts?!"
"Don't worry I got it all in control." He winks at me. Oh no, what is Cade up to?
