I walked into the doctor’s office, and Mantis had a messenger bag over her shoulder and a coffee cup in her hand, like she was ready to go out. I gave her a confused look as we walked in. She flashed a smile.
“Did I schedule the wrong day, doc?” I asked.
“No, today we’re just taking a field trip,” she said. “Trust me, let’s go.”
“You’re the doctor,” I shrugged.
Doctor Mantis grabbed my hand, and we both teleported away in a flash of light. When we reappeared, it was at a tiny patch of land way out of the way of The Village. In a soft patch of dirt was a headstone. It was weathered, but still read her name. The dirt didn’t even show signs of being upturned at all.
“I’ll give you time,” Mantis said, taking a rose out of her messenger bag and giving it to me. She waited a distance away as I approached the headstone.
“Mina,” I said out loud. “I don’t know who you are now, or how you’re alive, but I know you died that day, in my arms.”
I dropped the rose at the gravestone, and breathed deeply.
“I’ll make it up to you Mina, I promise. For real this time.”
I turned away and walked back to Doctor Mantis, and we locked hands. I looked back once before we disappeared in a flash of light, leaving the grave all on its own. The one that said “Here Lies Mina”.
