Ah, I guess that's why he didn't offer to let her mom live with them in his castle -- because he too is a free spirit.
And it appears neither the prince nor Gifu thought this through -- considered that leaving an old woman to live alone is an incredibly cold thing in a society with poor tech and no social security? The prince probably grew up surrounded by rich people who aged and died in comfort, and Gifu is... Gifu.
