Laelia had walked into the Doctor's room feeling horrible, she just knew she was pregnant, and couldn’t think of another explanation for nausea and light-headedness and the frequent emotional outbursts.
She was called to the consultation room, she knew the usual Doctor had retired he sold his practice to some overseas Doctor apparently a Greek man with money who had fancied being a physician in South Africa, who in their right mind wanted to be a gynaecologist she was sure that old Dr Miles wasn’t a perverse old man she had known him all her life but that was beside the point, what man would willingly dig around in female anatomy other than to have sex and some such.
He must be a sleazy pervert she thought, which almost made her turn around and walk back out of the Doctors’ office. But just then Joan saw that she wanted to bolt and spoke to her softly and kindly, it’s all right Laelia, Dr Papadopoulos, is a very sweet man he will treat you with the care you deserve, you can go on through. Yeah right! She thought to herself as she walked to the consultation room 3rd door from the right, she knew this already had known this fact for almost 3 years now. The other 2 doors were the bathroom and the dispensary yes she knew these offices like the back of her hand if not better.
She gave a light knock, not waiting for the new Doctor to tell her to come in, she opened the door kept her eyes downcast and walked into the room, sat down in the chair she knew so well with a heavy sense of bitterness in her heart, how long had she dreamt of becoming a mother, how long had she been trying, how long has it been disappointment after disappointment.
And now, she could feel it in her bones like the old people say, she could feel it in her bones her very soul that she was with child. Then why wasn’t she happier?
She focussed on her hands because she was too uncomfortable telling this new Doctor anything as personal as the last month of her life and why she was sitting in this chair right now, she just wanted to get the tests over with and go back home and curl up in bed into a little ball and cry. She had been very emotional the last week or so, crying at the drop of a hat or getting infuriated at the most inane things.
It was quiet, too quiet in here but she refused to look at the Doctor, she didn’t have to speak to him he just had to do what every other Doctor does, take her blood pressure, glucose, and haemoglobin and test her urine for the results and maybe do a blood test to be 100% sure she was pregnant even though she knew she was.
There was rustling and the sound of a chair being pushed back and then she saw two very expensive-looking Italian loafers come into view. What? Why was he standing in front of her? Shouldn’t he be telling her to come to sit or lie down on the table so he can take her blood pressure and all the usual stuff that always happened in Doctor's rooms?
Then her mind went numb, he had placed his index finger under her chin had tilted her head up to look at him and then she had been scorched burned to a crisp, a bolt of lightning had passed through her brain and had completely incinerated her tongue, the moment she had met his eyes the world had fallen away, there was nothing only these two pools of the clear blue that anchored her, the rest of her had disappeared, she couldn’t put a thought into words couldn’t even think of a single thing to say or do she was spellbound and soaring through the clearest sky she had ever seen.
A sudden knock had her back in the here and now, she swung her head towards the door the spell broken, but not forgotten. She gulped some air and looked as Joan quirked an eyebrow over the rim of her spectacles and walked into the room placing some files on the desk, and as she always had done in the past 3 years invited Laelia for a cup of tea after seeing the Doctor, she politely accepted as best she could and turned her face back towards the man standing in the middle of the room with the most amazing baffled expression on his face.
This utterly devastatingly handsome man with his blue eyes was her new Doctor?
Did he just one day decide to walk off the European modelling scene into a doctorate degree or what, he was just too perfect to be a doctor, Oh! No! He was her Doctor, her Gynaecologist, no, no, no.
