Also, the pressure to go out with the girls. I got railroaded into taking a girl to prom, then ended up having her as a girlfriend for several years even though I knew I was gay. The pressure, both from her and from friends & family was too much. This was 1990, so of course it wasn’t quite as safe to be gay either.
