The air was cold and silent as I woke up in the dark cabin, thick chains around my wrists and feet. The full moon's light was shining up most of the room, guiding me as I quietly sat up from the bed. I took a firm grip of the chains, breaking them open slowly with ease as not to make too much noise. The broad shoulders of the man on the bed were just peeking out from underneath the thin fabric, rising slightly in rhythm to his breathing.
When I had broken the last chain I stood up, quietly making my way out of the room as I closed the door gently behind me. Finally being outside I took a deep breath, letting the cold fresh air fill my lungs as I took a night stroll on the deck. I had been feeling restless upon the oncoming full moon, a feeling that would drive any man mad given enough time. The madness had already sunk its teeth into my skin years ago, leaving a stubbornness in its wake which was still holding on to the faintest hope of some inking of humanity. I shook away my bitter thoughts, walking up to the bow of the ship before jumping up onto the railing, my feet dangling on the outside of the ship. I watched as the waves from underneath me crashed onto the ship's wooden hull, before turning my head up to the sky and full moon, taking a deep breath once more, to savour the feeling of it caressing my skin.
The faint heartbeat from the distance grew as a pair of footsteps quietly got closer, knowing by now who they belonged to I kept my eyes set on the dark horizon as his presence didn't bother me.
- She is quite beautiful tonight.
- Indeed.
I somehow knew he held his arms crossed, brows slightly furrowed and a tired look on his face as he stared into the back of my neck.
- I seem to have an escapee aboard, you wouldn’t know anything about that?
A faint chuckle escaped my lips as the once humourless pirate was entertaining me with his sarcasm.
- I'm afraid that I am of no help, maybe you should have a look below deck.
- Perhaps that is a wise suggestion.
I could hear Icarus take a few steps closer, making me turn my gaze away from him as to not let him see my bright red colored eyes. He let out a heavy sigh before opening his mouth once more.
- I think it would be in your best interest to come back inside my cabin.
The mere thought of the restless sleep and uncontrollable itching underneath my skin if I were to go back to the bed made an uncomfortable and unwilling feeling sweep over me. I let my voice be calm, almost sounding a bit saddened as I spoke.
- Would it really kill you to just let me do as I please for just a moment? It's not like I have done anything the other times I have escaped.
- I do not appreciate disobedience.
- Captain. Just once?
My tone was still calm, a bit more quiet than I had anticipated for but it was still heard. There was a moment of silence between us, as if he really gave it some thought before giving me his final judgement.
- Fine. I hope you do not mind my company then.
- I have gotten used to you by now.
I couldn't help but smile slightly, shifting my body over to the left side of the bowsprit before Icarus jumped up and placed himself beside me on the other side.
- What are you gonna do after you find the treasure?
- What a pirate always does. Go look for more.
Another faint chuckle escaped my lips as I laid my head against Icarus’ shoulder, feeling him stiffen by the sudden touch. Yet he didn't say anything about it, letting me rest against him as we looked into the dark ocean.
- And here I thought you were an original pirate.
- What gave you that idea?
- You are unusually soft for a pirate.
- Soft. Not a word usually associated with me.
- Really? Are you perhaps a ruthless pirate by nature?
- I choose to rule my crew and ship within certain code of conduct. The actions of a captain will always reflect on his crew.
- What if you had no choice?
There was a pause, as if he needed a few moments to think for an answer. I couldn't help but swallow, the waiting making my heartbeat rise as I almost felt scared to know his thoughts.
- No choice in being violent and ruthless? I have a hard time believing that such behavior is nothing but a choice. You always have the ability to choose your actions.
The bitter reality making the small hope I had of him maybe understanding. I wondered would his answer be any different if he knew?
- Do you believe in fate?
- Sometimes. I think I would like to see myself as independent from the world around me. But time and time again I find myself in situations out of my own control. I cannot help but think that is fate.
- Then, would you call our meeting fate?
Ever since we met there has been this weird feeling about him, which I couldn't really make out of.
- I suppose it is. Since I did not exactly intend on finding you on that ship, nor keeping you alive at first. Yet, here you are.
- One could wonder why that might be.
A thoughtful agreeing humm escaped Icarus lips, the answer making the thought of going to bed seem like a good idea. I had at least gotten some night air, making me pull away from Icarus as I stretched my arms up in the sky. I gave him a light patting on the leg before jumping back down onto deck, brushing the wrinkles out of my clothes before letting my words roll off my tongue.
- Shall we?
I said without turning around to face him, simply beginning to walk as I heard him jump back onto the wooden surface as well.
Walking first I went straight to the bed, only stopping in my tracks by the edge as to wait for Icarus to put another pair of shackles on my wrists. But as he crunched down and took away the broken chains I couldn't help but to smile, taking my boots off before taking my place by the side closest to the wall. I let out a heavy sigh as I made myself somewhat comfortable, facing the wall as Icarus laid down onto the bed beside me.
