Since I have decided to help Noel and Harper fight their evil sister as a superhero, I am going to need a good costume. Every good superhero has a recognizable costume: Savior-Man, The Black Knight, and my personal favorite Dragon-Man. But unlike professional heroes, I don’t have unlimited resources to afford a good-quality costume. So I have to work with what I have.
Digging into my closet, I couldn’t find anything remotely useful to be used as a superhero costume.
I was on the verge of giving up until I saw something blue sitting on the top of my closet. I took it down to see what it was. It was an old jumpsuit I bought last year. Scott and I had this ridiculous plan to start working out so we could attract some girls. Nothing has come of it, but at least I got a “free” superhero costume. I put it on in the closet so the ghost sisters won’t see me naked, again.
It was a tight fit and the blue really stands out, but it’s not too flashy. This will work for me for the time being, since I don't plan on being a superhero forever. It’s just easier to become one while helping the Frosts out with their goal. In Liberty City, superheroes are similar to cops as they respond to illegal activities. What they differ in is that superheroes do not answer to anybody unless they are in a team. That, and superheroes are more well-liked than the police.
I stepped out of the closet to show the girls my “new” outfit.
“Ta-da! What do you girls think?”
“It looks like you are going out for a jog,” Noel said bluntly.
“Well, I bought these for working out, but never got around to it. : I said smoothing out the wrinkles on the suit.
“Hey, Ken. Can I ask you a question?” Harper said suddenly.
“Yeah, shoot.”
“What’s the real reason you’re helping us don’t say superpowers either.”
“This again?”
“Yes. I really want to know your reason. You don’t have a savior complex, do you?”
“No, I don’t have a savior complex, Harper. If you really want to know, fine I’ll tell you. But don’t be surprised when it’s nothing too special.”
I let out a breath.
“I’m helping you because somebody helped me. Remember when I told you about the lady who owns this place? Her name is Levy and she rescued me when I was at my lowest point.”
“What do you mean?” Noel asked, tilting her head.
“Two years ago, I ran away from the orphanage I was staying at. To make ends meet, I started selling dope and stayed with some shady people. Levy, who was a cop, arrested me. But instead of taking me to juvie or back to the orphanage, she got a job and let me stay here.”
“And since she showed me kindness where nobody else would, I promise to pay it forward whenever I can.”
“Ah, that’s so sweet!” Harper said as she fluttered her eyes.
“Enough with the mushy stuff, we should head out,” Noel said.
“Right.” I nodded my head in agreement.
A loud knock came on my door. “Shit, I guess it's that time again.”
I faced the ghost girls, “Can you two turn invisible or something? I don’t want anybody knowing that I am being haunted.”
“We understand, come on Harper.”
“But I want to know who’s at the door.” Harper pouted.
“It is none of our concern now let us return.” The girls vanish before my eyes.
Return? I wonder what Noel meant by that? I should ask her after I answer the door.
Another knock, this time faster.
“Alright, I heard ya!” I answered the door and opened it wide.
Levy was standing there, holding bags of groceries. “What the hell took you so long to open the damn door?”
She barged in and made her way to the kitchen to put away the food.
“What are you blind? I’m getting ready for a run.”
She turned to face me and stared up and down at me with her golden eyes. “What the hell do you need to run for?”
“For stamina and health. You can never have an early start at good health” That was such a stupid lie, I’ll be shocked if she even believes me.
Levy shrugged her shoulders and continued putting away groceries. “Eh, suit yourself.”
I can’t believe she actually bought that. Whatever I better not look a gift horse in the mouth.
“I’ve got to run. See you tonight.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
I leave and shut the door behind me. The Frost sisters appeared behind me.
“Who was that?” Harper asked.
“That was Levy, every now and again, she buys me some healthy food so I won’t live off of junk food all the time.”
“I see,” Noel said, touching her chin and being lost in thought.
When I stepped outside, it was still early in the morning and the sun hadn't risen yet. There was hardly anybody out. It was supposed to be twenty degrees Fahrenheit but it’s not cold, at least to me.
“What’s going on, how come I don’t feel the cold?”
“It’s because we have fused with your soul, granting you our powers and abilities. My special ability is controlling water and the cold. Harper can control fire and heat.”
“For real!? That’s awesome!”
“Damn right it is?” Harper said, winking at me.
“And that is why you must train so you can properly utilize our powers safely,” Noel said, raising one finger.
“What will happen if I don’t?” I asked.
“You can very well destroy Liberty City itself.”
Yikes. I swallowed a bit after she told me that. I was just going to half-ass it, but now I really have to give it my all.
“We can’t have me destroying the city, seeing as I live here and all.” I joked.
The ghost girls looked at me as if I was a deranged lunatic. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to crawl back into my bed and hide underneath my sheets.
“Let’s just go,” I said, as I hung my head.
“Where to?” Noel asked
“An old car junkyard me and my buds hang out at. At this early in the day, it will be completely abandoned.”
“How far is it?”
“Uh, pretty far. Why so many questions?”
“Because I want you to jump there.”
“Excuse me?”
“Remember when Noel said that our family was descended from demons. Well, because of that we got more powers than fire and ice. We can jump really high, have super strength…” Harper said, waving her arms all over the place.
“That’s enough Harper, he can figure it out for himself.”
“Well, there is no time like the present,” I said, as I bent my knees.
In a single bound, I jumped on top of the roof of the building across the street.
“Holy shit! Did I just do that?” I said, almost yelling it.
“This is no time for you to be excited about every little feat. The faster you get used to our powers, the closer we can get to stopping Marceline.” Noel said.
Sigh. No rest for the wicked. But she does have a point, I should stay focused on training and getting used to these powers.
