I like to think of overly complicated lives for background characters.
For instance, that guy on the left with the camera in the fourth panel is just not having a good day. Not only does he have to badger models for his paycheck, which is not where he intended his career to come to, but he has to sit idly by as this random kid tries to outsass his partner, who might as well be the Queen of Hell. With her pronounced cheekbones and cat's eye glasses, she's the only thing standing between him and actually somewhat enjoying his job for once.
Hang in there buddy, soon your partner will get sassed out and you can go home to your three kids. Keep their smiles in mind, always. You need a reason to fight on.
Charlie's goals in life are pretty simple : get her High School diploma, become a legal adult, take care of her 4 y/o way too literate brother and make sure social services don't realize they live on their own.
So grabbing the unfortunate interest of one famous James Hardford sure wasn't part of her plans, especially when he (like about everyone else apparently) thinks she's a boy!
