This little story had been tucked away in my sketch library since October of 2020. I’d worked on it on and off since then and finally, in these last few weeks, possessed enough inspiration to complete it.
So here’s some fun info…
If you’re wondering why I chose 1896, it’s because it’s an interesting year in the world’s history: the X-ray machine is exhibited for the first time; the first modern Olympics are held; and Henry Ford develops his first vehicle.
Although the earliest hunting expeditions in Africa happened as early as the 17th century, the African safari was likely well established by the mid to late 1800s if we are to taking any hints from literary works of the time. Companies that put on the luxury tented versions like Charlie’s were established in the early 1900’s, but were probably (informally) already all the rage as entertainment for European and American travelers before then. Since I dislike (read hate) the idea of killing anything for pleasure, I felt it was an appropriate backdrop for Henry who preys (viciously and despicably) on Lilly.
I took some liberties, but a high class brothel called the Oriental Palace actually existed between 1926 and 1946. It was actually located in Reims rather than Paris.
I took huge liberties with the telephone in this story! Transatlantic calling was not possible until 1926. Although telephones would have been in use in Cairo in 1896, they would not have been very widespread. Post offices were likely to have one as they were often the distribution center for messages. More correctly, transatlantic telegraph would have been used for long distance communication in 1896/97…but there’s nothing like a game of telephone to create some challenges for Max and Lilly now that the hunt is on. Who knows what Henry will do now!
Will I turn this into a longer piece? Don’t know! But if I get a ton of votes, I’ll certainly consider it. Thus, I hope you enjoyed ‘Lions in the Dark’.
