I bring you the first mini-episode! Here's a small glimpse into Mercedes' life. In my original script I hadn't planned for mini episodes, but instead periodic breaks where I could get other artists to craft some mini episodes outside of the main story. But after drawing many pages, and thinking about the other characters more and more, I realized how important they were to me (but also how impatient and excited I am to be able to explore other characters lol). So this is the first introduction to some characters outside of Alex, to help establish some background and universe-building. I will continue doing these to break up and add context to the story and to feature characters outside the narrator of each chapter. In the future, after I get more established, I hope to also feature some lovely art from other talented artists.
An important note, this mini episode happens directly between the two episodes before and after it in time. Because not every new chapter or mini-episode happens directly after the previous, I will always try to make a note for clarification of when on the timeline it happens, though there should be clues in the dialogue or images that should give away the time that it happens to any keen observer.
When I was a senior in high school I got railroaded into taking a girl to the prom. I was very closeted and single, and this girl became very persistent. She was very pretty but a bit on the heavy side, and I was tall, thin, long blond hair, etc. The main reason I ended up taking her was that I heard some of her friends telling her that she didn’t have a chance with somebody like me (though the peer pressure to take a girl - any girl - to the prom was very high as well). I also had the faint hope that maybe if I tried it with a girl I could straighten myself out.
We ended up dating for over a year. I did not straighten myself out. She ended up figuring out my secret (though I never acted on it - I would never have fooled around behind her back), and we split up after we both graduated community college, her a nurse and me a mechanic. We remained friends, and to this day 30 years later we still see each other occasionally.
It’s the start of his senior year and Alex is one of the most popular guys at school. Despite excelling in both academics and sports, Alex fears a big secret he’s been keeping could threaten to upend his social status and jeopardize all his friendships. Will Alex be able to stay calm and keep things "operating normally," or will he slip up and reveal the truth he’s been hiding?
Wear Your Heart Out tells a series of parallel storylines in a non-linear fashion and follows a diverse cast of characters going through their final years in high school. Each chapter is told from the perspectives of characters encountered in and around Alex’s life to highlight how we each experience the same circumstances in vastly different ways. At its core, this coming-of-age story is about hope, optimism, and love, but still must address some of the hardships faced by each character to give buoyancy to their perseverance. The story is about representation and features several LGBTQ+ characters and themes.
