“There's one more thing you should learn today,” said aunt Zhenya. “That's about the powers I've used. All those thunderstorms and rains, lightnings and even bringing some essence of life in it. These powers were gained a centuries ago by our ancestry. And those powers are actually gods' powers.”
“What do you mean?” Pavel was confused by the words “gods' powers”.
“I mean that magicians are used to be killing gods. That's how we got our powers,” answered aunt Zhenya.
“Gods? They are exist?” It was easy for Pavel to believe in magic. But gods. He couldn't even imagine it.
“They were vicious creatures. A pure uncontrollable evil without any borders, without anything to hold back their temper. And the worst thing was that they were powerful. The most powerful creatures in the world doing whatever they wanted. That's why the magician had to rise against them. Killing gods wasn't easy. And it had never been way to get their power for a magician doing it. Because to kill a god you should die yourself. That's all about sacrifice. There's no way to make someone do it. That's not gonna work. A magician had make this decision himself. Decide to sacrifice himself while killing that creature in order to save others from it with his or her free will. Then perhaps the clan this magician belonged get the power of those god he killed sacrificing himself. But do not worry there's no more gods left in this world. It cost a great amount of lives. Our ancestry had done this for us to live safe from those creatures. No one has to die now. We're safe from that disease our planet had got in the past.”
At this moment Pavel realized that that was a reason why people had abandoned religions. They actually never believed in gods. They had known the gods existed. But the moment no more gods left people just threw them out from their memory. Threw them out their lives. Ignoring the fact they had been existed.
There were no more gods. No sense in religions. And they had become atheists.
Pavel didn't understand before how people could had believed in such a things in the past. It seemed to be so weird. But if the gods had existed it was just a fact not faith.
Was it possible the faith hadn't actually existed?
“I got my lightnings from a god named Perun,” said aunt Zhenya. “We have to pay all honor and respect to our powers. They were so hard to get.”
“That's all so brutal.”
“Yeah, yeah,” agreed aunt Zhenya. “But the most powerful magic always requires a great sacrifice. Killing gods belongs to this kind. And like all powerful magic it has consequences which are not possible to predict. There's a theory in our family connected with the gods. It's about the veil. Do you remember I've promised to tell you about it?”
“Certainly,” said Pavel. “So how is it connected to the gods?”
“In a year 1816 Svyatoslav Skopin killed the god named Asclepius. It was the last god left on the planet. After his death the veil had started to cover the world. No one knows exactly what the veil is and why it exists. So, that's just a speculation which has all chances to turn out as a truth. But the fact is that the veil had manifested for the first time right after killing Asclepius. So those two things might be connected. I'd tell even more. The appearance of the veil is the consequence of the killing the last of the gods. As I've said the strong powerful magic has unpredictable consequences powerful as well.”
“But... this seems to be too much. It affected the whole world.”
“Good,” aunt Zhenya smiled. “Now you understand what can be done with the magic. And I also should say that it wasn't an only consequence. Svyatoslav Skopin was the head of the Skopin Clan. After his death the clan fall apart. And was close to disappearing. It was a disaster.”
The rain ended up soon. They both were breathing wet cold air watching onto the darkness around.
Aunt Zhenya spoke again then.
“So now you know about the source of magical powers. And about what they could cost,” she said. “There are lots of things to learn and much more to understand. That's why you should be careful and don't perform any magic without our guidance.”
Pavel nodded.
Aunt Zhenya continued. “Tomorrow you will be learning from our estate trustee. Go to the town with Timofei. There's some work for him. You will be watching and, if he says so, assisting.”
“But what can I do?” Pavel was surprised.
“We'll see. Don't worry about it. Just listen for Timofei carefully and everything will be okay. He is a skilled and experienced magician who knows and really loves his work.”
“I see,” said Pavel.
“There's one more thing about Timofei. Our clan has a power we had got from one goddess. It is tricky and complicated. Well, like all gods' powers. It could be called the power of destiny. And it manifested in a different ways. Not every clan member possesses this power. Timofei does. And you also do. I feel a touch of the destiny on you.”
“What does it mean for me?” asked Pavel.
“This can not be explained with the words,” answered aunt Zhenya. “One day you are going to understand this yourself.”
“So, I assume that those gods' powers are the reason of studding magic in clan.”
“That's not an only reason. But you are right,” said aunt Zhenya. “There are also a lot of clan magic which doesn't connected with gods. Some clan secrets. The magicians have been working at spell and technics for hundreds of years making our powers sophisticated. The most of it is kept inside the clan.” Aunt Zhenya turned to the door. “But you had enough for today. We'll continue later. Now you should rest for tomorrow.”
Pavel followed her.
“I have one question,” he said.
“Ask.”
“It's about the clan. I assume that we are relatives with you. And also uncle Sergey is my relative certainly. But not every clan member is my relative. Piotr had said that he doesn't. So how does it work? Everything with the clan I mean. And who is my relative here?”
“Piotr was wrong,” said aunt Zhenya. “Since he is a clan member he is your relative also. For magician that's the same as blood relationship. Piotr has become a rightful clan member not long ago. He didn't get used to it yet. But these are his issues. I should probably speak to him about it.”
“No, no. I didn't mean...”
“I see,” smiled aunt Zhenya. “I'm not going to tell Piotr about this conversation. But he still has some stuff to sort out. Which is my concern as the head of the clan. And in order to make it easier for you to understand I should make it clear. Me and you are quite distant relatives. But we are still relatives. Timofei is also your distant relative. Piotr, Lyosha and also Sasha are not your blood relatives. But they are rightful clan members which means the same for the magicians.”
