He saw the love of his life across him, leaning her forehead to the windows, letting the light from her laptop shine on her face. She lets her warm drink cold by not consuming it yet. Her eyes were painted by exhaustion, that even when he was disappointed by their lack of interaction, he didn’t have the heart to complain.
“You know putting your head on a cold surface like this, really is comforting” she said, gazing outside where it rains. For a second he looked over to where she was staring, only finding a scene covered by fog. He reached towards her, putting his hand on her forehead, finding that it was at normal temperature. She raised her eyebrow.
“Just checking. Turns out probably it was only your brain overheating,” he said. He sipped his own beverage and then continued his job also.
“Yeah probably, I wonder if all we would do in life is just work and work and work. Money, money, and money so that we would survive day to day,” she sighed deeply, momentarily closing her eyes.
He asked her about it once, why she worked so hard to get her own money. He said that he would cover all expenses and provide money for both of them. But she refused.
“I only felt like I could own it, when I earned it on my own. I have nothing against my family, but what I learned from the was that, no matter what you have to have your own income,”
At first there was a jab at his pride, as to think that maybe she didn’t trust his ability enough to be able to provide. But later he knew that she struggled financially as a young girl. There was no stable ground for her, so it shaped her to be someone independent.
“I always think that not all things go smoothly, regardless of anybody's abilities. There is also always the unknown factor, some people call it luck, I call it fate. That factor is a wild card, so to anticipate that, I have to always have backup plan,”
For that, she worked tirelessly, which was one of her traits that he admired. Sometimes, she felt like a threat, as he felt her greatness and he felt for once, in a place of no power. But nowadays she became his inspiration. So he supported her along the way, whatever her choices were.
“Then why don’t you try to pick a job that makes you feel alive? Your passion? Right now no matter what, you could turn it into money,” he offered her an advice “, and I’ll help you as you adjust, until you can stand on your own again,”
She smiled at him, and all of today's staleness was worth it.
“That’s quite a leap of faith,” she said to him. He went over from the other side of the table to give her a hug from behind. She seemed to lean towards him for a bit.
“Aren’t you quite a master at back up plans?”
“I suppose so,” she went out of his embrace and went back to her work. So he went back to his seat.
“I’ll buy you another one okay? That’s too cold now. But the next one you’re going to drink it right away, right?” he pointed at her drink, taking it away from her. She peered over from her work to him, giving a giggle.
“Sure”
It was still foggy, and they still couldn’t really see what’s outside. But one thing they knew was that there will always be a moment of warmth even in uncertainty.
