“Luke! What happened to the vampire?” Ellie exclaimed, pointing her flashlight at Luke.
“Can you believe this fudging guy? He followed you?!” Skully grunted at Ellie. Luke sauntered over to where they were standing. “I took care of it, he is gone. What are you doing down here anyway?” Luke asked Ellie, glancing at Skully.
“I… We’re looking for clues, it’s kind of a long story, but we met a vampire who gave us a quest to solve some murders so that we can meet another vampire who might know Skully.” Ellie blurted out, taking a deep breath. She was not sure if she should say too much. Luke was a vampire hunter after all, she didn’t want him running off to kill Mr. Fitz.
“Maybe we should get out of here…” Luke suggested, shifting his gaze to the sarcophagus.
“No, we have to investigate the sarcophagus, something came in here and killed the vampire sleeping in it. Possibly the same demon that attacked me and Skully.” Ellie explained as she proceeded towards the sarcophagus. She ran her fingers across the symbols and markings, the surface was rough. Her fingers went all the way to the black vine marks on the lid, it felt different, smooth.
Ellie glanced at Luke. “Um, you think somehow we could push the lid aside?” She suggested, trying to nudge it by herself.
“I’m not sure if we should do that.” Luke replied, his gaze cold and detached.
“Fudge, even I wanna open the lid now.” Skully scoffed, chuckling slightly.
“Please, just a quick look and we’ll go!” She pleaded with Luke, pouting her lips.
“Fine, fine, I said I would help you with the skull right, so I guess this is part of it.” Luke conceded, throwing his hands up.
Ellie smiled at him. They both pushed the lid with all their strength, nudging it slightly off centre, enough to peer inside.
“I guess there’s nothing much left in there.” Ellie whispered, staring at the inside of the sarcophagus, it was all black. She pointed her flashlight at every corner, nothing but black.
“It kinda reminds me of the darkness that day.” Skully remarked.
“Yeah, it does.” Ellie agreed, she was sure now, that demon was behind this. Luke glanced at Ellie. “Are you talking to the skull?”
“Yes. Sorry about that.” Ellie giggled, she locked eyes with Luke.
His eyes shifted to the skull. ”Do you think I could give it a try?” Luke asked Ellie.
She tilted her head, puzzled as to what he had meant. “Try what?”
“Oh, talking to the skull, you know, see if poking my finger on his fang will work?” Luke explained, his lips curled up slightly.
“What?! No way this guy’s gonna touch my fangs! Fudge it! I’m out!” Skully barked, to no avail.
Ellie handed Skully to Luke. “Here, give it a try, I guess if it works then anyone can talk to him right?” Ellie beamed, she felt happy for Skully.
“Don’t Ellie! I don’t wanna talk to this guy!” Skully pleaded desperately.
Luke carried the skull with one hand, he stared at the fangs and lifted his middle finger, poking it until it started bleeding.
“Please don’t hear me.” Skully grumbled.
“Wow, I can hear him, he just said please don’t hear me.” Luke exclaimed, actually sounding astonished.
Ellie marvelled. Now Skully can have more friends! She thought to herself.
“Ugh, great, I’m just gonna stop talking all together.” Skully complained, disgruntled by the events. Luke chuckled, something about the skull made him feel quite amused.
The three of them made their way out of the underground crypt, closing up everything as they left. “Fudging crypts.” Skully grumbled. Ellie glanced at Luke, she had felt quite relieved when he came to their rescue, she was not sure what could have happened if not for Luke. Skully noticed Ellie looking at Luke. Sometimes I wish she was a bit more level headed. He thought as they wandered through the cemetery. The sun was already setting, the trees were full of crows cawing at them.
“These crows are quite pesky. They like to steal stuff, just last week one of them snatched my keys right out of my hand.” Luke remarked, glaring at the crows, squinting his eyes. Ellie giggled, she took out some cookies from her backpack and placed them under one of the trees. The crows flapped their wings and gathered in front of them.
“There’s a trick to dealing with crows.” Ellie stated before she continued. “Always give them food.” She smirked at Luke. The crows all cawed as they finished up the cookies, one brave crow flew over to Ellie and placed himself right on top of Skully.
“Oy! Why is there a fudging crow on me?!” Skully shouted. The crow cawed even louder. Luke started laughing. Ellie burst out into laughter as well, she laughed so much the crow flew off. They watched it fly high up, its wings stretch out, blending in with the darkening sky. One single feather glided down towards them, Luke swiftly caught it. He gazed at it, twisting it around a few times before he handed it to Ellie.
“Here, you seem to like these kinds of things.” Luke mentioned as he placed it into her hand.
Her eyes grew bigger, and she smiled again. “Thanks. I love feathers.” Ellie replied shyly, holding the feather gently in the palm of her hand, gazing at Luke. He continued strolling down the path out of the cemetery. Ellie swiftly caught up with him. “I’m going this way.” Luke told Ellie. “I wanna check out the hunters' journals again for more clues about Skully.” He added, glancing at the skull.
“Ok… See you later, or tomorrow, whichever.” Ellie hesitated, she wanted to say something else but the words were not flowing out of her mouth.
“Bye! I won’t miss you!” Skully sneered, he was never one to mince words. Luke walked off, waving his hand ever so slightly at Ellie.
Ellie let out a sigh, she had decided to give Juliette a call.
“Skully. I’m gonna take Juliette up on the job offer. We need more leads.” She proclaimed with determination. Skully knew she was going to accept.
“I guess you can’t resist a new adventure.” He muttered, knowing full well that Ellie was just going to throw herself into trouble again.
Valentine, why is it so familiar? Skully wondered, keeping an eye on Ellie. She wanted them to find something. To solve the mystery was all she actually wanted, Skully turning her into a vampire would be the bonus, a new adventure. She looked up at the sky, it seemed so dark tonight, all the stars were hiding. Crossing the bridge to new Dawn, flashes of dazzling neons hit them, a stark contrast between old and new, divided by the slow flowing Dawn river.
