On his way home from the last day of Sophomore year, Rory is nearly kidnapped by masked people on the street. Most teenagers would be defenseless against five kidnappers, but Rory is a fledgling Mage and he uses his magic to just barely get away. Unfortunately, his home is on fire and his mother is still inside. Just what do these people want with him and his family? Meanwhile, far away in a town called Hearthwood, another teenager is connecting to Rory through their dreams, and has fallen for him after years of meeting Rory every time he falls asleep.
