"Hey, Drue. What even is this blood festival thingy you people won't shut up about?" asked Izuki.

"Oh, the Blood moon festival? It's an event held once every decade by the High Council " replied Drue as he wandered around the dreary streets of Vokkud. It was silent. But somehow the silence spoke volumes. The land rotted in cracks and crevices as they made their way to a building that for lack of better terms Izuki deemed,

"Beat up..." he said with a disgusted look.

"Huh?! Are you blind?! This is one of the finest establishments in all the nether realms. We'd be lucky even to find an empty room because a major festival is around the corner." said Drue looking offended.

'Best? THIS IS THE BEST?! What the fuck does the worst look like then?' he thought to himself.

"Well let's go ahead and get settled in. You don't want to be outside when it gets dark in Gehenna" said Drue with a serious expression. Most of his words had been playful, almost cheerful. But this... this was no joke. Not a smile, a chuckle, or a grin. Just cold dead eyes.

Izuki gulped.

"We'd best get a room then", he said.

"What? Get a room? What do you mean?" asked Grue confused. Izuki stared at him, worried. Did he say something wrong? This was an inn, right?

"Wait. Isn't this an inn or am I insane?" asked Izuki.

"Oh yeah of course. But you don't just pay for things with money. Is that what you thought?" asked Drue as if in disbelief.

"Well, yeah... Isn't that how things are done around here?" asked Izuki as his anxiety grew even more.

"Money? Currency? Those are all things humans worry about. Us demons? Pfft. We don't need a system like that." said Drue as he reached for his blade handle, the hilt fixed firmly on his lower back near his waist.

"All those systems are based on the greed of humans. They don't have the guts to settle things based on their coded survival mechanisms, because that, of course, would mean bloodshed. Your species is fake. They use a path set down by a few of themselves to govern all of themselves. It's stupid and inefficient. That's why they are weak." he looked Izuki in the eyes as he continued.

"You've felt it haven't you? At least once, twice maybe? It varies based on their connection to their roots. That moment that your body just wanted to say, FUCK THIS SYSTEM, I'M KILLING THIS BASTARD RIGHT HERE AND NOW." he yelled the last part out which cause the nearby creatures to fly off in fear.

As Izuki listened. He remembered a suppressed memory. One that he had forced himself to forget. For the sake of being... human.

"Izuki... Izuki... throw the ball this way now... I swear I'll catch it this time." yelled a voice from across the park. I was Izuki's younger brother, Akira.

"Bleh...Yeah right. Like I'd use my full force against you. You'd probably just dodge like last time since you're a big scaredy cat." replied a young Izuki while putting his tongue out.

"Huh? I'm not a scaredy cat... I'm gonna tell mom you were making faces at me again if you don't throw the ball seriously this time..." said his younger brother pouting.

'Ugh, this brat...' thought Izuki.

"Fine. Go long!" Said Izuki as he cranked his arm and released a powerful throw. (For a seven-year-old)

"I got it. I got it..." said Akira as he watched the ball fly over his head into the bushes.

"Aw, man... Now I have to go get it. Do you see why I didn't wanna throw it seriously? Ugh... wait here." groaned Izuki.

He dropped his glove on the grass with a thud and ran into the bushes following the trajectory the ball had followed. As he searched through the shrubs he finally found the ball. But... it seemed like it had a guardian. A cobra had slithered into a coil with the ball in the middle. He and the serpent locked eyes for a while. Upon slowly reaching for the ball the snake also opened up its hood and hissed. It looked like this foe wasn't planning on returning the ball. It was a baseball signed by one of his favorite players his dad had just barely managed to get him. It was very dear to him. Yet, here he was. His ownership was being challenged by this mere reptile. But even the reptile must have thought similarly. This human child was trying to take what he had found. It didn't know what it was. Or what it meant. But he found it fair and square. Thus it was its property.

'Why? Why do I have to let my ball go because of a simple snake?" Izuki thought fuming. Just because I'm weaker than it... Do I have to let what is dear to me go? In the end, it all comes down to strength, doesn't it? The weak are destined to let strong things go. That's just how it is. He got up dusted his knees and turned to leave. He could've sworn he saw a smile on that thing's face. This is what it feels like to lose. It felt disgusting. But that was all. It was disgusting, but he could do nothing about it. Strength. STRENGTH! It exists for the sole reason of comfort. No comfort for the weak. He turned around and looked the serpent in his eyes. His rage manifested itself. As a raging ocean. But he wasn't stupid. He wasn't gonna rush to his death. No. He would crush this serpent with both his intellect and strength. He turned around and left. The Cobra relaxed. Almost as if overwhelmed by the presence of a higher creature. No. It ruled the woods, and that wasn't changing anytime soon. It was its win. As it thought of this, it noticed it had gotten a little darker. Huh? But it was still mid-day....... No. It was too late. The shadow quickly shrunk, and with a loud thud, it was all over. But Izuki wanted more. He wasn't done. He raised the rock again and let it down once more... then again... and again... and again... Until the last and final thud. He looked up. The cicada's noise rang in his ears. He could taste metal. He touched his jaw and his fingers were stained with blood. He must have hit his jaw while crushing his foe, but he didn't feel any pain. He lifted the rock to reveal a bloody mess of organs and bones. He looked at it for a while, then took one of the snake's fangs. He collected the ball and walked over to a nearby stream and washed his hands. He looked at his face and he immediately noticed something.

"Why... am I smiling?" he asked his reflection as it revealed a sickening grin. "Did it... feel good?" he asked again.

"Yes. Yes, it felt awesome... HahaHAHaHAHaHahahaahHahaha. I WON. I AM STRONGER!" He yelled while laughing at his reflection. But he was soon interrupted...

"Big brother?" Akira asked from behind him. Izuki jerked. How long was Akira watching? Was he going to tell mom? He'd get hit again if they found out he'd killed yet another forest animal.

'In that case...' Izuki thought as he grabbed a nearby rock. He slowly pulled it to himself and waited for his brother to approach him.

"B-big brother?" asked Akira as he approached Izuki "Did you kill that snake?"

Akira was within striking distance now. Izuki tightened his grip on the rock and was ready to make the strike.

"Did you win?" asked Akira suddenly. Izuki was taken aback. He turned to look at Akira who was wearing an Innocent smile.

"Yeah... yeah, I won, and I got the ball", replied Izuki, the smile returning to his lips.

"Did it feel good?" asked Akira.

"Yeah... yeah, it did?" replied Izuki.

"Will you show me how?" asked Akira.

"Sure", he said as he handed Akira the rock and pointed toward a nearby squirrel...

'It feels so good' thought Izuki...
