It was pitch black as I made my way to Johnny’s car. He was parked pretty far down the street in order to not draw attention to himself. I on the other hand was feeling the pressure of sneaking out. If someone saw me, my entire team could be fired. If no one saw me I was in the clear to hang out with Johnny.
Occasional lights sprung up around the premises. Usually just someone with a flashlight on their way from one building to another. The lights made me nervous every time.
I was surprised when I approached his car without getting caught. He still drove his mom’s old compact car. The giant rust spot was still on the passenger side door. The hood of the car still had its red paint missing from when he hit a deer. Everything was exactly the same as it was six months ago.
Taking a deep breath I opened the car door and slid into the passenger seat. Johnny looked as handsome as ever. He had tanned skin that was rough from all the time he spent outside. He was extremely muscled which could be seen even through the heaviest of sweatshirts. His wavy brown hair was a little messy, in a way that showed that he just got out of bed. His blue eyes were truly a spectacle on his face. They were almost gray, they were such a light blue. Reminiscent of the clearest waters at a beach resort.
He turned to look at me for a couple seconds, “Hey,” he smiled.
I almost couldn’t hear him over the sound of my heartbeat, “Hi.”
He put the car into drive. Even though we were down the street from the Agency, it was still risky for me to be this close.
Our relationship had been on and off for the better part of five years. Despite that, we always found our way back to each other. It didn’t hurt any less when we did break up for a short amount of time. Ever since I met him, I knew he was my soulmate. Everything just clicked when we were together. My life never made sense until I met him.
He stopped the car when we pulled into a local park. I hadn’t lived in this area for very long. My family lived across the country and I hadn’t had the time to explore the new town I was living in.
“I’m not going to lie, you look as beautiful as ever,” he smiled, showing off his dimples.
I looked down at my lap, my accelerating heart rate unceasing, “You don’t look too bad yourself.”
He laughed, “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
He shifted in his seat so he was facing me. A small smile never left his face. He played with his hands, a nervous habit he had if he didn’t know if it was an appropriate time to hold my hand. I made the first move and grabbed his hands. We were sitting even closer to each other now. I’m sure we’d sit even closer if the console wasn’t in the way.
I didn’t want to bring up the troubles we had in the past, I wanted to enjoy this moment in its entirety, but I had to know why he wanted to see me.
“It’s that I’m not happy to see you, I’m pretty ecstatic actually. I just need to know why you came back. You were pretty bent on never seeing me again. You even told me we had no future together, so what gives?” My voice was catching on to my words as I tried not to cry.
“As soon as we broke up I knew it was a mistake. I couldn’t bring it to myself to contact you, no matter how much I wanted to. I kept telling myself to give you space and I tried to move on, but I just couldn’t. Every day I thought about you. Finally, I just couldn’t take it anymore, I had to see you. I took a plane this morning.”
“I missed you too,” I felt happier than I had in a long time.
He reached for a piece of my hair and started playing with it. There was always this one part of my hair that he played with. At that moment I didn’t mind it in the slightest.
“What’ve you been up to all this time?” I asked.
“I ended up getting that job at the private gym.”
“No way, that’s amazing! I smiled.
There were a couple seconds of silence. That always happened when we were together. We were just comfortable with saying nothing.
Just as I was about to put my hand over his he took it back, “Woah, look at the moon.”
It was on my side of the car. I turn my head to get a better look outside. The moon was huge. There was a full moon tonight and the sky was so clear. All the craters were clearly visible. It had been a long time since I had enjoyed the sight of the moon.
“What’s that on the back of your neck?” he asked.
I pulled my hair to the side, “It’s an outline of a heart. I wanted a permanent reminder of my family while I was.”
“I’ve been wanting you to get a tattoo for years,” he puts his hand on the back of my neck and traces the tattoo with his thumb. His touch made my skin feel like it was burning.
He used his other hand and tilted my head towards him. Using barely any force he kissed my cheek. He closed his eyes and leaned in for another kiss, this time on my lips. I raised my hand in front of my face, blocking the kiss.
“I don’t know if we should go that far,” I said.
His eyes linger on my lips for a second, “Ok, no problem. We should probably get going anyways.”
I made it safely back to the apartments before one a.m. This time there was no one outside. No lights that could get me caught and no random employees.
I slipped through the window and pulled the ladder up. I knew that there was a chance that someone could’ve seen the ladder out my window. My apartment was just as I had left it. It was pitch black.
I carefully took my shoes off. If I make too much noise then the people in the surrounding apartments could hear me. The last thing I needed was one of my teammates barging into my room as I was taking my shoes off.
As soon as I walked into the living room, the light turned on. Keira was standing next to the light switch. She looked more cocky than usual. My cover had been blown.
“What are you doing here?” I crossed my arms.
She plopped onto the couch, “I just thought I’d come for a quick visit.”
I clenched my fist, “Really? At one in the morning?”
“What? Am I not allowed to visit my best friend?” Her grin was infuriating.
“We’re not friends,” I replied, “You know that I escaped. How?”
“It just so happened that I ran into Clarisse. Sweet girl, but not a very good liar.”
I leaned against the couch, “Why do you even care?”
"I love conflict that doesn't involve me."
“You’re ridiculous,” I punched the bridge of my nose, “You know if you tell anyone then we’ll all be in trouble, right?”
“I’m aware. If I tell Lucas though he’ll make training horrible for you.”
I racked my brain, trying my hardest to get out of this situation, “What’re your terms?”
“My terms?” She stood up from the couch and walked up to me, our faces were inches from each other.
“How do I get you not to tell?”
She smiled, “You’re coming to training with me tomorrow.”
