“What are you wearing?” I asked as I walked into the gym.
“Workout clothes,” Keira answered as she was tying her shoes.
I grabbed a dumbbell off the rack, “I’m wearing workout clothes, you’re wearing winter clothes.”
She turned to look at me, “Oh, don’t worry about it. I have a condition that makes me freezing all the time.”
I snapped my fingers, and a small flame appeared above my fingertips, “I can set you on fire if you want.”
“No thanks. Maybe some other time,” she laughed.
This was going to be terrible. I was stuck in a room with this arrogant idiot. I was already tired and cranky from not having any coffee this morning. The stupid machine finally broke on me. Johnny never messaged me back either. I asked him if he wanted to plan anything soon and to no surprise, he didn’t answer back. This was all becoming too familiar again.
We started out by doing our own workouts. I started out by doing some weightlifting. Barbell squats, bench presses, and dumbbell curls. My plan wasn’t to do anything too strenuous today. There was going to be a full day of training tomorrow after all.
I had headphones in for the first couple of minutes, getting fully immersed in rock music. My plan was foiled almost immediately. Keira connected her music to the speakers in the room and started blaring pop music. I could’ve kept my headphones in but all the noise was starting to give me a headache.
I took them out of my ears, very annoyed. I was expecting some of the most cliched music with barely any substance. To my surprise though, her taste in music wasn’t terrible. I usually didn’t listen to pop music so this was a surprise.
Before I knew it we were both belting out the lyrics to every song. We both sounded pretty terrible but didn’t care. There was no one in here anyways. Blackmail had crossed my mind but then I realized my singing would be in the background too.
“Hey, before we start belting out more songs, wanna spot me?” Keira asked.
“Sure.”
She laid down on the bench and slid under the bar. I stood behind her. She was going to do two sets of five. After the first couple of sets, I heard my phone vibrate in my back pocket. It was Johnny.
I’ll drop by in about ten minutes.
I’m busy right now. How about in an hour? I texted back.
An hour? Really? What’s the point of hanging out at all then?
I was starting to get a little worried at this point. Did I just potentially ruin everything? This was just like it was before. He’d get all weird about hanging out. If we didn’t hang out exactly when he wanted to, then he would cancel plans completely. I had to fix this.
Does fifteen minutes work? I really want to see you.
Ugh, I guess. I’ll be parked at the same spot. You better be there in fifteen minutes or I’m leaving.
Ok, sounds good!
Getting out of here in fifteen minutes was going to be nothing short of a miracle. There was no way Keira was going to let me leave early. Especially to hang out with Johnny. Why does Keira have to be so annoying?
“Help. Kinda struggling here.”
I looked down. She was looking up at me with fearful eyes. The weight had dropped on her chest close to her neck. She agonized as she tried to push the bar up. I leaned over her and pulled it back up to the rack.
She sat up on the bench, breathing heavily. Her hand was holding her chest and her eyes were closed, “Thanks for the help.”
Of course, she was blaming me, “Don’t lift weights too heavy. It’s dangerous.”
She stood up from the bench, “If you were paying attention, then I would’ve been fine.”
I crossed my arms, “You’re blaming me for this? Are you serious?”
“I know my limits. I’ve done those weights tens of times before. As a spotter don’t you think you should be paying attention?” She walked towards me. She got her face so close to mine that our noses were practically touching.
“You're ridiculous,” I walked away from her and grabbed my bag off the ground, “I’m done being lectured by you.”
“You’re acting like a child,” she rolled her eyes.
“Say what you want. You’re just-” I was about to finish my sentence when I noticed something moving outside the door. It looked to be two figures wearing black hoodies.
There was nothing past these doors. No rooms or anything. It just leads outside. There should be no reason for anyone to be in the building unless they were coming to the weight room.
I slang my bag over my shoulder. I walked outside the door and headed in the direction I thought I saw them coming from. I could hear Keira behind me. She just had to be following me.
We walked around the corner. By this point, Keira was right next to me. Any annoyance she had towards me was gone. A serious expression appeared on her face. The same she had back when that woman had attacked the agency. If I hadn’t known her, I would think she was pretty scary.
We both knew this hallway fairly well from all the training we were forced to do. Before we rounded the corner we both gave each other a look. Be prepared.
I snapped the quietest I ever could to not draw attention to us. I put my hand behind my back to hide the flames above my fingertips. She nodded at me.
I charged around the corner and was about to blast them to oblivion. At the very last second, I noticed that it was actually Lucas and Clarisse. They put down their hoods and swiftly stepped away from each other.
“Don’t shoot!” Lucas yelled.
I extinguished the flame, “What are you guys doing here?”
“We came to work out. Decided to get some extra training in.” Clarisse smiled.
Keira stood next to me, “Then why are you guys over here?”
“Clarisse wanted some help with her abilities. We couldn’t do it in a room filled with thousands of dollars worth of equipment.” Lucas stammered.
“Besides. What were you guys doing?” Clarisse raised an eyebrow.
“We were actually working out,” Keira laughed.
Why was everything such a disaster?
