“I just couldn’t believe him. He said that he wanted to spend time with me and all he did was talk about weightlifting. Every time I tried to talk about myself he changed the subject,” I sighed.
“I know you’re upset, but you also have to remember that he just got a new job. He probably just wants to talk about it with you,” my mom tried to look sympathetic.
“Then explain why he kept trying to change the subject,” I reasoned.
“Well, you do talk about yourself a lot.”
“Excuse me mother,” she gave me a look, “I mean mom. I do not talk about myself a lot.”
She played with her necklace, “I’m not saying that you like to be the center of attention, but you like being the center of attention.”
I feigned a look of surprise, “Well then, I see how it is. Anyways it’s not like it actually bothers me. It’s just kind of annoying.”
Mom laughed, “Whatever you say. How’s work? You know the actual reason you moved across the country.”
I shifted in my seat, “It’s good. We’re going on our first mission soon.”
She smiled, “That’s great.”
I saw a notification pop up at the top of the screen. Lucas requested that we get the materials we need for the mission and then come back to the meeting room.
“Gotta go, mom, talk to you later.”
“Don’t get into too much trouble. Love you,” she looked concerned.
“Love you too,” I hung up the phone.
I grabbed my coat and headed into the hallway. It only took a couple minutes to get to Clarisse’s apartment. I knocked on the door and it took her a couple seconds to come out.
“Ready to go?” she asked.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I laughed.
Getting the materials for the mission wasn’t as exciting as I thought it was going to be. This was one of our first major missions so I just assumed everything about it would be exciting. It wasn’t.
Clarisse and I were forced to go dress shopping and find the fanciest most out-there dresses we could possibly find. It wasn’t that I hated wearing dresses but the shopping part was the least fun. I could tell that Clarisse felt the same way.
“There are no rules about me wearing leggings under my dress, so I’m just going to need to find a really long one,” she said as she perused the many racks of dresses.
“I’m just hoping to find something that’s not too flashy.”
“Flashy doesn’t have to be bad, it can also look classy,” she looked at me with a smile.
“I guess.”
We continued looking for what felt like forever before finally settling on dresses. Clarisse picked out a light pink floor-length dress. It had a v-lined neckline with her waist cinched. It wasn’t too poofy and had a flowery pattern starting at the bodice and going three-fourths of the length of the dress.
For myself, I picked out a dark red floor-length dress. The sleeves of the dress were sheer and were made up of a red flowery pattern. Similarly to Clarisse’s dress, I had a flower design on the bodice that extended to three-fourths the length of the dress. My gown was much puffier than hers; it was pretty easy to move around in though.
We paid for the dresses using the budget that Dahlia gave us and headed back to the Agency. It was going to be around a fifteen-minute trek back. I shouldn’t know this area so well but I may or may not have snuck out one too many times.
When we got back to the apartments everyone else was already there. Carter was sitting at the table with Lucas. Keira was all dressed up. She looked absolutely gorgeous, to say the least. She was wearing a floor-length green dress that had her chest and arms completely covered. Don’t get me wrong it was nothing breathtaking or anything. It was just odd to see her dressed up.
There was another woman there as well whom I didn’t recognize. She was helping Keira with the dress. Probably to make sure everything fits properly.
“Oh good, you guys are back. You can put those in the closet over there,” Lucas indicated down the hallway.
Once we hung them up we sat down at the table. The woman was starting to make me feel uncomfortable. It was usually just the five of us. This mission also seemed too important to have an outsider here.
“Ok, you’re all set,” the woman said to Keira.
“Thanks a ton, Julia,” Keira said. I looked down at the notes, trying to distract myself from them.
“I’m only doing this because Carter asked me,” she said flatly.
“It means a lot to me,” Carter exclaimed.
“Anytime,” I heard the door slam.
I looked back up. Keira had taken off somewhere and Lucas sat back down at the table. Clarisse and I gave each other a confused look. At least I wasn’t the only one who had no clue who that woman was.
“Who was that?” Clarisse asked Lucas.
“Carter’s cousin, Julia Westbrooke. She’s a big name around here. She’s been working here for ten years. One of the best leaders at the Agency,” he had a sparkle in his eye.
“Speaking of which, she said that she’ll help us out with the mission if we need it,” Carter said.
“Sounds good to me,” Keira announced as she sat down across from me.
The next couple of hours were spent getting the finishing touches ready. Carter had found the documents that we needed while Lucas and Clarisse did more research on Robert Truly. The plan was starting to come into action. The only thing left was to wait until the end of the week for the event. I was hoping this plan of Carter’s was going to work.
