Chapter 5

Things Are Complicated

David reached into his pocket and gave me a comic book. He knows I really like comics and I wanted that issue for my birthday.

Then we got interrupted when I saw Dre on the basketball field. He was spinning the ball on his finger then turned and looked at me. I tried to hide my face but he already saw me, he then approached us. I could only guess the reason he saw me was because the guys on the field were playing football.

Of all the luck I could have, of all the places for this to have happened. I should have known it was a bad idea to have sneaked out and met up with David. Especially this park too, this used to be our spot at that.

“Yo, wah gwan yah suh?” Dre asked, I didn't know that Dre would be here at all. It was pretty awkward.

Then I looked at David who already looked pretty irate, he took his hands out of his pockets and looked at Dre. “Sasha, you know dah nigga yah?”

“Yeah, me and him ah go out now.” I said with the book in my hand and flooded my arms.

“Ah me mon, she ah me girl.” Dre says while spinning the ball on his finger.

David knocked the ball out of his hand and they started to size each other up, “Yuh have a problem yute?” Dre asked.

“Yeah, cah she ah my woman.” I went in between them and tried to part them. That's when David's ratchet knife fell out of his pocket.

Dre saw it and reached for his gun and took it out and cocked it, “Mi nuh fight wid knife yer dat boombo hole!.”

“Suck face yuh know which part yuh deh, ah my place this.” David said and I backed off a bit.

Dre looks at him up and down and fires his gun next to him and his hand hits me when he raises his hands. I screamed and ran off creating some more distance between me and them.

I couldn't believe what was happening. David started to get really angry. He took off the shirt, his eyes turned red and he grew bat-like wings, he hit Dre in the face and then started punching at him. Dre ducked and rolled then got up, “Mi nuh boxer yer dat. Me have bullet fi uno too enuh.” He said and reached in his pockets and changed his pistol chamber.

“Me have bullet fi likkle freaky blood sucka like you.” Dre says and cocks his gun. Then I shouted out, “Hello uno stop diss, please me a beg uno. David diss a one a di reason we did break up and Dre don't be stupid right now, honestly you cah just shoot him worse ina broad daylight.” Technically the sun was setting by now but I was saying all I can to stop them.

“So wah yuh still want him?”

“No, but still him ah like family to me.” I thought.

“No, but Just no bada mess up yuh life ova this. Him family is very powerful and I don’t want yuh to be in trouble because of me.”

“Ah better yuh listen to har enuh cah yuh cah come back round dem place yah again. Ah Rockway yuh deh yute. Come back round yah and yuh ah get yuh three points knock off.”

Suddenly some guys came behind David and they had weapons. One of them came up to me and grabbed my hand. It's like instincts kicked in. I twisted my wrist and did a hurdler jump and rolled backwards on the grass to get a way.

David Please. Don't do this. Just don't hurt him, think bout it for a minute yah go dash weh being on good terms with the government cause of this.” I pleaded with him.

“Ah wah do diss mad gyal yah, ah kick she just kick off ah me?!” The guy exclaimed.

David chuckled and told his little gang to chill.

“Suh ah dem waste man yah yuh ah deal wid Sasha?” He asked while gripping his pants and pointing. “How yuh fi do me dat gyal, yuh a wicked enuh.”

“Yah chat off yuh mouth cah we leff, you cah call me mon waste man, yuh bright and stink.” I answered back.

He told me to go about my way and fanned me off. “Not even worth it me nah fight ova nuh front. Me know uno nah go last. Know you soon crawl back to me. Nah mek yuh stress me ah bloodclaalltt.” He said and walked off.

I went with Dre to this building after, I say building but it looked like a trap house you see on T.V. all because he got a call. The people were listening to loud music and smoking. In one room there was a little studio, the scent of weed was strong in the air. He introduced me and he was busy talking to the person he was on the phone with, I was just on my phone most of the time texting David.

I had always known that David was a Vampire but Dre didn't know how David's family is, even though I only know half of it myself. I mostly know that his family has power and a lot of money, vampires are not supposed to go to school with other students without any powers. That's why they have Magic schools or schools specifically just for vampires. But really David can do anything he wants. His family has so much money I don't know why he did not attend a private school or a vampire school, guess it was just not his cup of tea.

He likes the fast life, the drugs, and the money, guess that's why he enjoys scamming. I mean he scammed me out of my heart and soul too.

We were best friends before we got into entanglement, I still feel more comfortable talking to him about my problems than my own family.

Too bad we have been on and off for three years, our relationship wasn’t perfect and it felt toxic at times.

Before we left the park though he threatened Dre about telling anyone at school what he is cause he also has dirt on Dre.

Back in the day, I used to hang out at his place and do his braids, that's when he handed me my first vape. I tried it once and I ended up liking it and we would do smoke tricks together before things went south.

Dre snapped me out of my reminiscing and took my hand. He had a backpack on his back and a blunt in his mouth. We went back on his bike and went to a motel, saying he wants to just hang out with me for the rest of the day.

When we entered the room he closed the curtains and took a laptop out of his bag and asked if I wanted to play a game on it with him.

He taught me how to play some of them, he mostly had gun games on his pc though.

When I got tired of that I asked if we could watch a movie, so he agreed and put on one and then excused himself saying he was going to the restroom. When he came out he was rubbing his nose and kept sniffling. I asked if he had a cold and he said it was just his allergies.

That day at the time I didn’t know it but vampires were going around entering Middlesex, the Human zone biting people and turning them into vampires, one of the main leaders of this attack were Valentine and Alfonso. They made another attack on the girls and guys in my community. Valentine lay waiting for two young ladies walking home from work at the bus stop. The road was silent and empty. That's when she ran up to them and bit them. She dragged them into a dark alley and sat and watched them crying out in pain. She tells them that basically if they live from the bite they are allowed to join a gang, a small organization where they are fighting for the betterment and treatment of silenced strong beings. If they decline she would let them die, the girls nod their heads saying yes they didn't even know or understand what she was talking about they just wanted the pain to stop.

Dre lay on his back looking at me and held my hand and rubbed it. I also touched his and his guard ring, he kept investigating my hand and said, “You hand small enuh. Like all your ring finger, so tiny. When me a buy yuh ring have fi mek sure I measure it first.” He said and laughed his eyes were looking hazy. “Oh please, the weed a talk to you.” I said and chuckled to myself.

When I sneaked back inside the house I had pizza and told my fake alibi that I went to meet up with my friends. The next day Mackenza went back home to get money from her parents and we agree to follow her since we planned on going to school together, we didn't expect though that she lived in our neighborhood and that they own the Ice cream shop where we often stood and sell, "Wait yuh live here, how come we nuh remember seeing you?" Sabrina asked.

Makenza grabbed her bag straps and said, "Oh yeah I mostly stay inside, my parents don't like me coming out. Especially with the girls going missing recently and the gunshots."

"Ohhh suh yuh a house rat." I said.

"What's that?" She asked.

"You, when some body nuh come out ah dem house much." She chuckles and said she will be back and ran inside. We noticed she had what looked like purple roses at her window. Then ran out back and we just went to the bus stop and waited for the bus.

At lunchtime, I invited Makenza to sit with me and my friends.

While we were eating she started eating gum then brought up the house rat statement I made and said, "Where I came. I used to hear people say; if it would be better off being a country rat or a city rat. I find it funny how I never really thought of the answer but today you called me a house rat." She said while now eating her patty.

"Well me woulda rather be a city rat, or better yet city girl, cah me couldn't tek di country life, no wifi well, me nuh have none now but I buy data and put pon mi phone more while." I said.

Makenza charms in, "I rather live as a country rat and live to fight another day. The city is too dangerous."

"Girl every weh dangerous yuh deh a sum part a country yuh nuh know when duppy ago box yuh or rolling calf lick yuh down flat or Mr teif a come fi yuh goat dem. Fi Fling dem ina car and put on hat and sunglasses pon dem fi disguised as people. " I said as everyone laughed.
