The city of Maracaibo has a storied history of pirate attacks. The first time the city was attacked by pirates was in 1614. Then it was once again sacked in 1642 by the British privateer (pirate) William Jackson. In 1666, in an event known as "The Sacking of Maracaibo", famous torture pirate Francois L'Olonnais sacked and plundered the city of Maracaibo. Three years later, in 1669, pirate Captain Henry Morgan (for whom "Captain Morgan" rum is named) led an attack on the city of Maracaibo, leading to an event known as "The Sacking of Maracaibo". And finally, in 1678, the city of Maracaibo was plundered once again by French privateer Michel de Grammont, who didn't find much worth taking.
