Sleep was not coming easily for me tonight. The room was dark and all was familiar but I could not get over the feeling of eyes boring into me no matter which way I laid. I could hear their deep snorting breaths and the rustling sounds they made too.
I sat upright and turned on the lamp beside me ready to face the discomfort.
"Faye this isn't working." I sighed looking at my friend sitting on a wooden chair facing my bed.
"Look Poppy this is the quickest and easiest way to see if you are being kidnapped or not." The words spilled out of her mouth in a jittery mess.
"How many coffees did you have again?"
"Enough to get this done as long as you go to sleep soon!" Faye grabbed the bag at her feet and began rifling through it. "Aha!"
"Aha what..." Aha was never a good sound when it came from Faye. Especially a high on caffeine Faye.
"This is a quick knock me out. It'll glide you off in seconds but won't keep you asleep."
"Who did you get that from?"
"An Alchemist..."
I sighed. "It was from that dodgy guy who keeps trying to get you to date him. What was his name again..."
"Barry isn't that dodgy... Just a bit obsessed with lizards."
"Yeah i'm not taking Barry juice. Just breath quietly and i'll try again."
I could still hear her there but I could also hear something calling me. A distant sad snuffling that came closer and closer.
---
And there I was back in a wolf's embrace. I listened to him breath in and out. Where Faye's breathing had unsettled me I found his snuffles reassuring. Probably not the best sign but then again this giant wolf had never tried to feed me back alley potions full of who knew what abominations.
"If you're real we really need to have a chat." I said patting his fur sleepily. "I'm pretty sure you don't need to kidnap someone for cuddles."
Poppy's life is simple. She works as a Librarian at an Arcane University, lives alone in a small flat and sometimes goes out drinking with her friends.
There is absolutely nothing special about her.
So why every night for the past month has she woken in the middle of the night in a giant wolf's embrace? Is it just a weird dream? Or is something else going on?
